I was doing a radio show last week, The Networking CEO, discussing how to win in the Trust and Value Economy, when the host, Patty Farmer, asked me why I named my business MotionFirst.

I love that question! Because it gives me a chance to talk about one of my core beliefs, what I like to call the Law of MotionFirst. Yes, it is based on our good friend Sir Isaac Newton's law: An object in motion tends to stay in motion; an object at rest stays tends to stay at rest. Sir Isaac may have discovered the law, but I made it my business. I firmly believe if you want to be successful today, you have to move first.

It is my fundamental belief that success comes from movement -- Motionfirst. Yes, it is important to plan, to gain knowledge, to strategize, but you must do all this while consistently taking action. As business owners and professionals with payrolls to meet and bottom lines to build, we have to continue to "do" our business while we "grow" our business.

Consistent action and movement is the difference today between businesses that succeed and those that struggle; between professionals who surpass their goals and those who just struggle to get there. Show me a successful business, and I'll show you a business that has a dedicated system or process that they work everyday, day-in and day-out, to grow their business. Show me the "lucky" professional, and I will show you a leader who, no matter the challenges, no matter the obstacles, gets out there every day and consistently takes action to serve their clients and grow their portfolio.

It is simple: taking action -- consistent action -- will lead to success. It isn't rocket science, it isn't complicated, it is just a matter of commitment, perseverance and discipline. Now granted, the better action you take, the more quality in your actions, the better skills you have, all of that plays a role, but none of that matters if you don't first take action.

Believe me, there are plenty of people out there more talented than you, better qualified than you, sitting home wondering why they can't make a living. And there are plenty of people out there with half your talent and barely qualified who are making an unbelievable living, all because they are willing to consistently take action. May not be fair, but it is true.

When you move, good things happen. You discover new ideas, find new opportunities, and begin to focus on the possibilities. Deals seem to drop out of the sky, as if they are some strange cosmic reward you get for being a person of action. Just try it. Adopt the LAW of MotionFirst and watch as your struggle turns to success.
