In order to become the true leader of your life you must examine yourself closely to determine what do you really want. It seems like a simple question, "What do you want in life?" but in reality it is a loaded question because the follow up question is, "Why?"

You might make a list about the things you want and it may look like this:

Lose Weight
Earn 120K per Year
Build a Nice Home
Create World Peace
End World Hunger
Find True Love
Have Children
Be close to my Grandchildren
Grow an Organic Garden
Teach others how to grow an Organic Garden
Grow an Organic Garden in the Inner City

While making this list you may come to understand that your true passion in life is to turn the world on to growing organic gardens. You might decide that teaching people to grow their own community organic gardens is what you want to do with your life. Yet, you may not realize that you can earn enough money through this work to support your other dreams, so you shrug it off as a hobby or as an unattainable dream.

Yet, time and again people have shown that when they follow their true purpose and aim, the other needs and wants soon follow. When you go forward and act with integrity, keeping your heart, mind and spirit in alignment, amazing things begin to happen.

Now, this does not mean quit your job today, and follow your bliss. What this means is that if you have a true calling to do something other than what you are doing, you need to start weeding your personal garden until you are able to cultivate the type of life you really desire.

There may be some items on your list that you do not have control over personally; those are the things that you must cross off your list. Keep the items on your list that only you can control. Of course, outside forces exist, but the reality is, you only have control over one thing in your life, and that is your own actions.

The last line in Sinclair Lewis's Babbit reads: "I have never done a thing that I wanted to do in all my life." Are you living the life that you want or a life of conformity?
