For infinite times, and in infinite births, we all have suffered in the cycle of attachment and abhorrence. Since we have not been able to understand what attachment and abhorrence is, how it is formed, and how we can get rid of it, we’ve not been able to come out of this vicious cycle of suffering. Once we come out of attachment and abhorrence, we will be free from birth and death and achieve ultimate moksha

What Is Attachment and Abhorrence?

Let us understand this through an example.

Imagine a family of two brothers - elder one is Rahul and younger one is Ashish. Rahul loves Ashish more than anybody else. One day, when Ashish steals money from his friend, Rahul scolds him and gets upset; and does not talk to him for 2 days. Here,

- First, Rahul has lot of attachment for Ashish. Rahul has a strong wrong belief that “I am Rahul, the elder brother, and Ashish is my younger brother.”

- Then, Rahul scolds Ashish and does not talk to him for 2 days. This scolding and being upset is referred to as abhorrence. Rahul had wrong belief that “How can my brother steal?”

If Rahul had the right belief, then what would it be like?

If Rahul would have had the right belief that, “I am really not Rahul, I am a Pure Soul. And so is Ashish, he too is really a Pure Soul. Believing myself to be Rahul is my ego. And I am seeing Ashish at fault due to my wrong vision. Stealing is an act that is a result of Ashish’s wrong opinion of past. If presently, I help him change his opinion, he will not steal in future!”

When Rahul begins to view Ashish as a Pure Soul, his talk will automatically be full of love.

To see the true identity in the person i.e. you see the other person as ‘Pure Soul’ - this is the vision one must keep because that is the real knowledge.

Having this vision, Rahul would explain Ashish with love that stealing is a wrong thing to do, and he would make him aware of its dire consequences. Thereby, he would gently make his younger brother change his opinion to ‘Stealing is wrong’, and would stand by his side patiently until he successfully overcomes this wrong habit of stealing. In the meanwhile, owing to his habit, if Ashish happens to steal again, he would once again help him strengthen the opinion of ‘Stealing is wrong’, and ask him to humbly and heartily repent for his mistake before God every-time he committed such mistake. Throughout this process, Rahul would continue to have a normal relationship, without any grudge or sorrow. If we ourselves are disturbed inside, then how can we give love to the other person?

Quote from Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan, a Self-Enlightened Gnani Purush

The Self is indeed the Pure Soul, it is free from attachment and abhorrence. However, the non-Self complex (Rahul, in our example) is with attachment and abhorrence; it is the one that needs to become free of attachment and abhorrence. For the non-Self complex to become free of attachment and abhorrence, the Knowledge about the Pure Soul has to be realized.

How Is Attachment & Abhorrence Formed?

Have you ever guessed, who was the first person with whom you had attachment and abhorrence?

The Answer is, You!

We were all born with this attachment and abhorrence, as we don’t know our real identity. You think that “I am Rahul (your name)”. Is that your real identity? Was your name Rahul in all the births? Did you have the same body in all the births? Your answer will be “No.” Body gets cremated and name goes away. So those two are not your own. Who is permanently your own then? Who really are you?

The answer is, “You are a Pure Soul, permanent and immortal.”

You are a Pure Soul (without faults), and Rahul is just a temporary body who does all the faults.

Because of this wrong belief of “I am Rahul (you may insert your own name here)” we bind attachment towards Rahul and develop abhorrence towards the “Self-Pure Soul.” Wherever there is an attachment, abhorrence I bound to follow. See next…

How Can We Get Rid Of Attachment & Abhorrence?

Attain Self-realization (Knowledge of the Pure Soul) from a Gnani Purush, the Enlightened One, and follow His teachings. Remaining in the shelter of the Enlightened One will help dissolve all your attachment and abhorrence.

When you take Self-realization, you gain your real identity. You realize ‘I am a Pure Soul and your body is a temporary phenomenon’. You attain the right belief. Applying this right belief towards every person that you meet, gradually results in reducing attachment and abhorrence towards them. On the other hand, until you dwell in the wrong belief of ‘I am Rahul’, you will continue to bind yourself in the binds of more and more attachment and abhorrence.

Who Will Give You Self-Realization?

Gnani Purush alone can grace us with Self-Realization. He is the Enlightened One who has the divine, spiritual power to enlighten others too. Gnani has freed his Self from the vicious cycle of attachment and abhorrence and has become the Embodiment of Pre Love (Pure Soul).

If one wants to acquire the supreme love, a love that this world has not seen, heard, believed or experienced before, then one should worship the Living embodiment of love - the Gnani Purush. If a person were to experience the love and oneness of being with the Gnani Purush just once, he will constantly meditate on Him thereafter. Gnani will always be in his memory in spite of being bound by life's miseries!
We are fortunate to have between us Pujya Deepakbhai, who is the Living Gnani Purush!!!

He imparts Self-Realization to anyone who is keen to receive it. Millions of people have experienced fruits of His compassion, love and his unwavering efforts to help the people in this world attain Self-Realization and arrive at the right belief; and I am one of them ...
