Do you find it hard to focus or concentrate on the task at hand?

Phospholipids are essential molecules that are found in cellular membranes. A lining called the cell membrane surrounds each brain cell. Without a healthy cell membrane, we cannot have optimum memory and mental function.

Phospholipids, as the name implies, are made of the combination of lipids (fats) and the mineral phosphorus, and play several roles in the brain. They not only determine which minerals and nutrients go in and out of the cell, but also influence communication between brain cells by influencing the shape of receptors and promoting the growth of dendrites.

Since they help form the cell membrane of the trillions of cells in the body, it makes sense that they would have influence on a number of organs and tissues, including the heart, blood cells and the immune system, and also the brain.

Phospholipids help support healthy memory and mood, mental clarity, concentration, alertness and focus

Two important phospholipids are phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) and phosphatidylserine. And a cell in the human body cannot function normally without these two crucial phospholipids!

Like omega-3 fatty acids, they are vital for optimal brain health. They help brain cells communicate and influence how well receptors function. Phospholipids are found in high concentrations in soy, eggs, fish eggs, and the brain tissue of animals. There may actually be a biochemical rational for the folk wisdom that says eating brain makes you smarter, but I would not recommend anything I wouldn’t do myself, and eating animal brain is way down on my list of to do’s!

However, since most people’s nutritional and lifestyle habits fall way short of expectations, and taking into account the low quality of most foods available today, I wouldn’t rely solely on food to provide you with the necessary phospholipid intake.
