Success Skills specialist Stephen Pierce explains the secret of Mind Mapping and how it can help you increase the amount of information you retain from reading.
Great video. I have to say i love the idea of mindmapping but always forget (or don't want) to do it.
This is a really easy way. I would say however that sometimes the Nuggets of information found in a book are not always what you are looking for...
I am reminded of the time, when I was in high school, that this classmate who probably worked harder to get C's than I did to get A's wailed to me, upon being given a big reading assignment, "How do I know what out of all this is important? What do I need to memorize?" I was astonished, because I just knew, intuitively, and therefore couldn't explain it to him. Thanks to Stephen's video, I will now not merely be able to help my young friends study by picking out what I understand they need to concentrate on, but by helping them understand for themselves what is important.
Classic photoreading. I am glad that Mr. Pierce mentioned Paul Shelee of Learning Strategies Corporation as his source. Jack Camfield also talks about using mindmapping frequently.
When I teach the "Steps to Infinite Success" (My private course) to people I have them use mind mapping for working out their dreams and goals.
One more trick you can use is if a chapter or an area of your life is your main focus then start a new map for that area and get some real detail. There is no limit to how many mindmaps you can have on one area.
I will say I have seen some computer generated mindmaps and they look terrible! Draw and write your mindmap out by hand!
Kevin,I believe what I wrote was quite strong!
I am a training developer and what I did was simply known as framing your reference. You don't know me or my background so I throw in a few facts to add to the validity of my point. I have no affliation with Learning Strategies Corporation but I have purchased many of their products including Photoreading which is where Mr. Pierce got his info to produce this video (Which seems an awefull lot like self promotion to me?). My course is private (not for sale) and I have only taught it to a few friends for free. So I am not quite sure how I am self-promoting, at least for a profit. I believe I was adding to this topic by explaining how I use mind-mapping in other ways besides remembering books. If that is not important to you then fine but I don't see the point to your comment.
I don't see why this wouldn't work. This can be a great tool to teach our kids. This would help them learn the material, take great notes, and use as a great refresher for material already studied to prepare for testing.
Thank you for this wonderful information. I have been having problems remembering what I read all my life and it hurts to know that you have spent hours or days reading a book and PUFF...it's gone. I will have fun with Mind Mapping.
Very effective technique that helps us to retain more of what we read.Mind mapping allows us to have access to information whenever it is needed.
Thanks Stephen!
Seems I have been mind mapping since I was a child and didn't know it! I always could retain information well, I always did well on tests. In my notes I used key points in my outline. That would help me remember what I read, so it works!
I've been Mind Mapping since 1994. Stephen is absolutely correct! Retention and recall of information goes through the roof! I use Mind Mapping for everything, including the the outline of my book. Its quick to learn and easy to do, yet its impact on your life is simply amazing. Thank you Stephen!!
I was looking for a way to connect all the elements of my speech, "Flatfeet, Snoops & Private Eyes - The Top 10 Mystery Novels of All Time" and mind mapping is how I will do it. Nice when what you need shows up, huh?
