When I was younger and couldn’t go to sleep at night, my dad told me when he couldn’t sleep he would close his eyes and imagine a big black chalk board. And every time something was written or drawn on that chalk board, he would quickly get his eraser and erase it so he could focus on nothing. By doing that, his mind would remain blank and free from worry or thoughts that would keep him awake. I used that little trick in the past and it has helped me to forget about things that are going on in my life so I can rest better at night. When I had trouble keeping that eraser in my hand, I ask God to help me hang on to it so I can immediately wipe away any distractions.

Why can’t we do that during the day? No, not sleep or walk around with our eye closed but we can use that concept of wiping out distractions quickly so we can focus. When we pray asking God to help us focus on him and then go about our regular routine, we sometimes forget that he is near and wants to help us all day long. So when we get distracted, we need to immediately wipe away the distractions that move us away from God so we remember that he is here with us.

2 Corinthians 7:1 “Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.”

Let’s say that we are busy working and we are interrupting by someone who needs our assistance. It is not something we can put off so we have to stop what we are doing and handle it. So instead of allowing worry to consume us because we aren’t going to get everything done we need to do, instead of letting anger creep up on us because we don’t understand why we have to do everything, instead of feeling sorry for ourselves because we are not appreciated, we need to wipe away all those feelings away immediately and focus on God. He will help us through it all and the devil can just take back those feelings because we don’t need them.

Getting into the habit of wiping something out of our heads immediately will help us to focus on God and what he wants us to do in our lives. It will save us a lot of time because we won’t get off track in our own little world. It will create a habit of staying on task for God and not letting the things of the world get to us. The devil may try to take away our eraser so we need to hold on to it tightly by keeping God’s word in our heart and minds. When we use our eraser and wipe away immediately, we can quickly turn our focus back to God so he can keep our body and spirit clean.
