There are many different types of proteins. They are therefore found in many different types of food. There are vegetable and animal protein sources. In this blog we will discuss two protein types of animal origin, namely whey protein and caseinate. Our body works differently with natural native whey protein and caseinate protein. Why? You can read and see that here!

What are whey proteins?

Whey protein (or whey protein) is a natural protein that originates in cheese production. When making cheese, a large side stream of whey is released in addition to curd after the milk has curdled. In the past, this meadow was simply discharged into nature. Until, among other things, stricter environmental legislation forced a number of smart people to find a different solution for this. It turned out that this whey contained a lot of proteins! Drying the whey left the protein powder.

Whey protein is the most used protein source in sports nutrition because it is directly absorbed by your body and is easy to digest. In addition, research has shown that whey contains proteins with a biological value of at least 104. That is even higher than that of a chicken egg, which has a value of no more than 100.

Whey protein that is obtained from the side stream of cheese production, however, has one major drawback. It has a different, sickly taste. As a result, a lot of sugars or aromas are added to many products made from 'cheese' whey protein to make the taste somewhat tasty. Opening the package already feels like a 'slap in the face' because the scent is very sweet or artificial.

What are Native Whey Proteins?

There is also whey protein that is made from fresh milk and does not arise from the cheese production process. This is called 'native whey', the purest form of whey protein. The taste of these whey proteins is much more neutral and therefore tasty without additives!

What are Caseinate Protein?

Caseinate is a protein made from fresh milk. The fresh milk is curdled so that curd is formed. This curd is filtered and dried, resulting in caseinate powder. These proteins have very different properties from those of whey protein. This way, caseinate gets a somewhat firmer form in your stomach. As a result, it is absorbed by the body much more slowly, up to 6 hours after ingestion. Slow food for your muscles for a long-term recovery. In addition, caseinate gives a very satiating feeling and so you get less appetite for snacks.

Main Ingredients?

Most protein powders are made from whey proteins or whey proteins. These proteins are a residual product that is left over from the production of cheese. Whey is not only rich in proteins, but also in vitamins and minerals. Unlike milk and cheese, whey hardly contains any fats. You would therefore think that whey powder is extremely healthy. However, this is by no means always the case, because the following unhealthy substances are added to countless protein powders:

  • Refined sugars (for the taste)
  • Synthetic sweeteners (aspartame, sorbitol, etc.)
  • Genetically engineered soy
  • Preservatives
  • Non-organic eggs (including antibiotics)
  • Gliadin- containing wheat gluten
  • Colors, fragrances & flavors
  • Inferior proteins (including gelatin and other “waste products”)
  • Hormones (including estrogens)
