Coaching can be described as:

“Guiding individuals to recognize and value their inner ability to find ways to turn opportunities into successes. Coaching involves determining obstacles that hinder an individual from moving forward and empowering the client to eliminate these difficulties. Coaching aims to provide clarity and direction where there was bewilderment and hesitancy. Coaching is a partnership between client and coach, thus, selecting a coach that fits your individuality is very important.”

From the definition above I hope you can appreciate that good coaching will involve discussion. The work of a coach, as in sports, he or she inspires and works with the client to develop a program that leads to an improvement in performance and behavior. The coach assists the client to live life to the fullest. The coach, though, should never force the client to take certain steps. Based on the client’s goals and desires it should be the coach’s aim to discuss possible ways forward and allow the client to decide on the path ahead.

Effective Coaching

For Coaching to be effective you need:

• Trust among client and coach must be present.
• The Coach’s respect and empathy towards client is a must.
• Fairness in the client-coach relationship.
• Focus on the present and ways to alter it to impact the future in a positive way.
• Challenging issues should not be overlooked.
• The client needs to be open minded to accept things and that adjustment is feasible.
• The client should be keen to try new ideas.
• Coaching is a rewarding conversation that considers possible options.
• The Coach inspires a shift in thinking to allow optimistic change and move towards goals.
• The client sets precise and attainable goals
• Discussion seeks to help the Client formulate personal goals.
• Removes confusion and obstacles.

How is Coaching Different to Therapy?

There are times when I am coaching a client, I feel like I am a therapist. However, my work as a life coach is to help move the client forward and dealing with the past is only helpful if it brings a lesson with it. A therapist usually looks at issues caused in the past and tries to investigate and repair it. Coaching is about looking to the future by changing the present.

Coaching involves enabling the client to be accountable for his or her current situation and encouraging him or her to take responsibility for the change that is necessary to move forward. Discussion about where the client is now is followed by asking where he/ she wants to be and how to get there.

The connection between therapist and client is different from that between life coach and client. The relationship of former is as specialist/ patient while the relationship of the latter is as allies.
