The other day my husband informed me that he was going to fix our screen door. I was a little surprised because he usually doesn’t like to fix things and he is really busy these days. So I asked him if maybe we should have our regular handyman do it. And he said an emphatic no. When I asked why, he said, “Because we don’t have any money!”
I was shocked that after all the study of vibrational energy and the universal laws of attraction principles that he would say that. Of course it wasn’t true. Although we were on a tight budget, we certainly could have afforded to pay someone to fix the screen door. When you say something with strong emotion that isn’t really true, there’s a story behind it. That story you are telling yourself needs to be examined in order to arrive at the truth. Then you can use the universal laws of attraction to change your story to one that is true for you.
My husband’s story was that he felt guilty that he hadn’t been able to work all summer because of an accident that he was recovering from. And he was afraid that if he spent any money, it would be all gone. His story was so real to him that he forgot that money was coming in, anyway. When you have this kind of thinking you are not using the universal laws of attraction to your advantage.
When he asked me what he should have said, I told him that he should have said something like, “I don’t want to spend the money on the screen door,” or ”I’d rather save the money and spend it on something more urgent or important.”
What is your story?
What is your story when you say something like, “I can’t afford it?” Are you frustrated because you don’t have enough money to buy everything you want? Are you angry because your boss won’t give you a raise, or because food prices have soared?
The difference in the mindset of the stories behind these statements:
“I don’t have any money” or “I can’t afford it”
and these statements:
“I don’t want to spend my money on that” or “I would rather spend the money on a something else”
is that in the first set, the person’s story is one of lack, and in the second set it is one of empowerment. By empowerment, I mean that this person may be as broke as the first person, but instead of expressing the frustration of that situation, this person is expressing the attitude of faith that it is a temporary situation and are “choosing” instead of “being compelled.” That kind of attitude will attract something that will change the situation a lot faster than the attitude of lack.
That is how you can use the universal laws of attraction to your advantage. Your thoughts attract what you are thinking about, so if you are thinking that the universe will supply your needs, it will because you are attracting it as you think about it.
Changing the story
One of the first things I tell my clients who are dealing with money issues is that they are not allowed to ever say, “I can’t afford it.” They have to put it another way. This gets them to start thinking about the story behind that statement and then we go to work on changing that story. As you change the story you can then use the enormous power of the universal laws of attraction to attract your desires with less effort and less stress.
