In the last five years, I've lost count of how many family members or acquaintances of mine have come home from the doctor's office with a prescription for statins in their hands. There is a good reason for this. Statins, also known as cholesterol-lowering drugs, are a multibillion-dollar annual business. And yet much of this hype is based purely on deception.

A quick search on this topic from the Internet will show that for every university medical study saying that statins reduce the risk of death from heart disease, there is one which says that statins are actually useless and dangerous. Keep in mind one fact: all medical studies are funded by somebody and most of them are actually funded by the pharmaceutical companies that sell the drugs in the studies. Now that is a conflict of interest.

So what are the dangers of statins? For one thing, statins have been proven to cause damage to the mitochondria, the microscopic, energy-producing organs in our cells. The mitochondria is where the combustion in our bodies takes place. Just like a car burns gasoline, our mitochondria burn food for energy. Damage to the mitochondria is permanent and shortens lifespan. Secondly, statins stop our body's production of coenzyme Q10. This coenzyme is essential in order for the heart to pump properly. Thirdly, statins are toxic exogenous substances that our bodies cannot process. Statins cause liver damage over time. This is why patients who are on statins are sent to do liver regular check-ups. The doctors know about the dangerous side-effects of statins.

So what can we do about it? There are natural ways to lower the "bad" LDL cholesterol. One of the most effective ways is to take concentrated fish oil capsules at a dose of six capsules per day. Fish oil not only lowers LDL, but it also raises HDL, the so-called good cholesterol, which is the cholesterol as it leaves your blood and goes back to the liver for processing. The fatty acids found in this supplement will also decrease triglycerides, homocysteine and blood pressure, three definite risk factors for heart disease.

Ideally, we should take a concentrated fish oil that also contains ubiquinol, which is coenzyme Q10 in its most absorbable form, and lycopene, a red pigment antioxidant found in tomatoes and which has been shown to protect both the heart and the prostate. There are also some very good-quality natural cholesterol-balancing products on the market today.

Finding a concentrated fish oil supplement that contains absorbable Q10 and is made with fish from the cleanest oceans in the world, far away from pollution and radiation, and taking the corresponding natural supplements, is the most important decision a customer has to make. After a decade of experience, I settled on one specific fish oil made withe clean fish from New Zealand, a product which is both potent, and pure.
