Picture this: you are focused on being, not doing. You are fully present in the now of this moment. And then this moment. And now this moment.
You are at peace. You flow with every circumstance and gift life has to offer, and life continues to offer you more and more amazing gifts.
How can a life without goals work?
Enjoy every moment. Appreciate every experience. Every day life presents new things to you. Each one is a gift. Whether you see it as a gift at the time or not, it is a gift. Sometimes the most difficult experiences can be the greatest gifts.
Say your goal is to have perfect health, but a devastating diagnosis leads you to understand the roots of health and wellness and ultimately results in not only a complete healing, but a much greater quality of life and inner peace than you ever had before. Or deep spiritual growth and healing, even if you are not cured, that you could not have attained otherwise.
Your goal is a lifelong storybook marriage, but a heartbreaking divorce leads you to discover talents and gifts you never knew you had and become the confident, independent person you could never have become while in the old relationship.
Every experience, even the difficult ones, the seemingly unjust ones, the cruelest events in life are really stepping stones to the growth of your soul. We all hate pain and sorrow, not just for ourselves, but especially when it strikes those who are dearest to us, especially the helpless ones, the very old, the very young, those with few or no resources.
But even these can be seen either as curses or as great gifts for the greater good. One of the consistent messages from those who have had Near Death Experiences or communications from those who have died and not returned is that everything is happening exactly the way it should. That there are no accidents.
If this is so, then why be upset about anything? If it is, then it is supposed to be. It doesn’t mean we have to like it. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work to change it, to make it better. But it does mean we don’t have to carry the victim mentality, which always disempowers. It means that we can always have our eye out for the blessing hidden in the pain, in the unfairness.
And if we approach life knowing that there is a blessing in every circumstance, life will give us more circumstances with beautiful, transcendent, sacred blessings.
If everything is happening just as it should be, there is a reason for our goals sometimes being derailed. Something better is hidden in the changed circumstance.
Not necessarily something that is immediately more fun, more enjoyable, or more closely lined up with what we want or think is right, but something that is ultimately better. The problem is that we want what we want because we think we know what’s best for us.
That may not be such an accurate assumption.
We want to control our lives because we feel that life is unsafe unless we control it to the greatest possible extent. But of course, we cannot control everything in life. And sometimes life seems to go out of its way to make that painfully clear.
But how can you accomplish anything without goals?
I’m not saying don’t purchase insurance. I’m not saying forget about an education. I’m not saying don’t make plans.
What I’m saying is that while you do all that, be open to where life wants to take you. Allow life to show you what’s best for you in any given moment. It may take you exactly where you had thought to go. Or it may take you someplace else entirely only to get you to a better place than you ever could have imagined.
If life is anything at all, it’s an adventure. You’re the hero of your adventure. Expect the unexpected, look for the gift in it, and when you find it, rejoice as you grow to the next level.
Don’t let goals become your chains.
