If we were honest with ourselves, we could say there are times when we feel inadequate and worthless. There are times when we feel we aren’t good enough to do something or be who we feel we need to be. We feel worthless at times because we fail or have struggles and we think no one else has to go through what we have to and no one else will understand.

We all have these feelings. We may hide behind them by putting on a front. We may run from them by searching out ways to temporarily make us feel good. We may think about them continuously and dwell on them so much we make our lives miserable. The best thing to do is to confront them and know if we don’t handle these feelings when they occur, we could easily take a wrong turn.

2 Timothy 2:16 “Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior.”

One instant of feeling inadequate can lead to a turn in the wrong direction where we undo all we have worked for. We may say something we shouldn’t. We may go somewhere we don’t need to be going. We may do something God doesn’t want us to do. We need to be sure we prepare for those feelings of inadequacy so we know what we can do to get past them and keep looking at the big picture rather instant gratification.

Feelings of worthlessness can be caused from comparing ourselves with others. Feelings of worthlessness can be caused from being down about a problem we have. Feelings of worthlessness can be caused by what someone says or thinks about us. We need to be sure we prepare for those feelings of worthlessness so we know what we can do to get past them as well.

We need to remember we are children of God. We are neither worthless nor inadequate. As children of God, we have been created for a purpose. People with purpose are not worthless. As children of God, we are given talents. People with talents are not inadequate.

We were created for a purpose and given talents for a reason. God has a plan for us. When we are on track with the plan He has created for us, we will find those feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness will go away. We will find that how we feel about ourselves and what others think doesn’t matter as much when we only focus on what God thinks.

God says we are wonderfully and marvelously made. When we focus on why He made us and what He wants us to do in our lives, we will forget about our feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness. God doesn’t want us to feel that way. We can’t do His will while we have those feelings. In order to make a difference for God, we should focus on His purpose and talents for us and forget about what the world thinks of us.

Psalm 139:14 “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.”
