When you were 20 it didn't seem a problem at all to stop by the Mac after a few liters of beer :-) You probably noticed that things are changing now. Bad habits just have more of an impact as you get older. Not a big deal, but something to keep an eye on. Below the top 10 to stay fit after your 50th and live longer!

Tip #1- Drink water for a healthy prostate!

Drinking water is good for your entire body, but also for your prostate, make sure you drink 2.5 liters of water daily. Especially if you already have complaints, it is good to drink plenty of water. Choose plain crystal clear water, not soda or flavored water.

Tip #2 - Watch your salt intake!

Many men eat too much salt. Pay close attention to what you eat, especially snacks such as chips, nuts and cheese contain a lot of salt. This can lead to high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Read a label before you just throw something in your shopping cart. We get a lot of salt by eating ready meals, soups, pizza, fries, sauces and savory snacks. A good tip to get your salt intake down is to make everything yourself.

Tip #3- Stay sharp!

Do you want to keep your mental sharpness as you get older? Eating well helps to maintain your mental fitness and can even reduce the risk of Alzheimer's later in life. Well what are you waiting for? What should you put in your shopping cart? Unroasted and unsalted nuts, oily fish, blueberries, coffee, Turmeric, Broccoli, Sunflower and pumpkin seeds, eggs and green tea. If you think you can use some extras for your mental fitness, you can think of supplements such as Curcumin, Omega 3 or Green Tea.

Tip #4- Keep your bones young!

Bone decalcification does not only occur in women. Men also lose bone mass after their 50th birthday. It is therefore smart to watch your calcium intake. You can find calcium in milk products, chia seeds, sesame seeds, sardines, and almonds for example. All tasty foods that help you fight brittle bones.

Note: Calcium works best together with magnesium, vitamins D and K, for the maintenance of strong bones and strong teeth

Tip #5- Eat healthy for a good sex life.

Watch what you eat. Do not eat too salty, too sweet or too fatty. At least not if you love your good sex life! Trans fats contribute to fattening the arteries and raise your cholesterol levels, which can result in erectile dysfunction. To maintain or increase your sexual performance, eat the best protein with healthy fats and stay away from refined sugars and trans fats.

Tip #6- Keep an eye on your weight

When you get older you gain weight faster, people are often less active and your metabolism is somewhat lower. If you don't want to gain weight unnoticed, it's smart to step on the scale a few times a week. It's easier to lose a few pounds than 5 pounds that have been added unnoticed.

Tip #7- Be good to your heart

From 50+ it is smart to pay more attention to your heart. We may not think about it, but your heart works hard, and deserves all the care you can give it. You can do enough to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease:

  • Eat fatty fish such as salmon, herring and eel. Twice a week is a good start.
  • Eat whole wheat bread and pasta, beans, green vegetables and fruit.
  • Eat a small handful of unroasted and unsalted nuts 5 times a week.
  • Get some exercise, try to be active for at least 30 minutes every day.
  • Fry meat, fish and vegetables in good fats such as olive oil and avocado oil.
