Having life goals is what keeps people moving.

Keeping that image of a destination is what motivates people to always go forward and not stagnate.

Someone with a stable income, for instance, but does not set goals for himself, will remain in the same state after ten years.

If, however, he begins to set certain objectives for his life, say, purchase a house in two years, then, he will definitely be on the road to progress.

Goal setting strategies are often as important as the goals themselves. Without proper motivation to keep one’s eye on the destination, things can easily tumble down and wither.

1. GOAL SETTING STRATEGIES: CREATING LONG-TERM GOALS

Long-term goals are those that span a period of years before they are realized.

Examples of these include buying a car, securing a home, reaching a career peak or a promotion, establishing a family, building credentials, and many more.

It is important to know what matters to you in life, so make up a list and write down all that you want to accomplish in the next five years or longer.

2. GOAL SETTING STRATEGIES: CREATING SHORT-TERM GOALS

Short-term goals are those that take at most six months to accomplish.

These may include the accumulation of a certain amount in savings, the purchase of furniture and other items, finding a suitable life companion, etc.

Once the long term goals have been established, it is only appropriate to jot down five or more short term goals underneath each of them. This way the tasks can be broken down in to smaller objectives that are more easily accomplished and that have a more realistic tone to them.

3. GOAL SETTING STRATEGIES: CREATING DAILY GOALS

The creation of a daily schedule or rundown of activities is one of the more fun and enjoyable goal setting strategies.

In order to achieve the objectives set within three to six months, constant daily steps must be taken towards each destination.

If, for instance, one intends to accumulate an amount of a hundred thousand dollars in savings in the next six months, then it would be easier to compute how much he would have to save every single day until then. This would have to include how much overtime work he is willing to do, and how much of his daily budget he is willing to cut off to have more allocations for savings.

4. GOAL SETTING STRATEGIES: ASKING THE CONSTANT QUESTION

In order to keep one’s eye on the prize, he must not be easily driven by distractions along the way. Along the line of saving money, for instance, throwing a relatively extravagant party would not be a fitting idea. Whatever action is taken, it is necessary to ask the question of whether or not the action is working for the goal at hand.

If it is not, then it would probably be best to eliminate or postpone it for another time or for after the goal is already met. The more distractions a person gives in to, the more time he will take to reach his intended objective.

The way to the goal is as important as the goal itself.
