Baked "Fried" Green Tomatoes

This dish calls for just a few simple and tasty ingredients and is easy and simple to make.

Fried Green Tomato Recipe:

Ingredients

3 medium size green tomatoes cut into ½ inch thick slices

1 whole egg and two egg whites

*

1 cup of seasoned bread crumbs

*

¼ teaspoon of red pepper (optional)

*

ground black pepper to taste

Fried Green Tomato Recipe:

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. In a shallow dish combine the whole egg and egg whites mixing them together. In a separate dish mix the bread crumbs, black pepper, and red pepper.

Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Either brush the tomato slices with the egg mixture or dip them in the mixture and then into the bread crumbs and arrange in a single layer on the baking sheet.

Bake for 45 minutes at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for about 45 minutes or until crisp and golden brown. Serve immediately.

These tomatoes go well with scrambled eggs for breakfast, with meat or fish for lunch or dinner or can be served with low fat ranch dressing as a snack.

Note:

If you want this dish to taste more Southern than substitute corn meal for the bread crumbs and add red pepper, black pepper, salt and dill for additional flavoring.

By choosing to bake this old time recipe you are cutting down on most of the saturated fats making this dish practically fat free while still keep a lot of the "fried" taste. Some people who have tried this recipe have actually found they prefer it done in the oven rather than fried.
