In today’s world, the fast paced lifestyle and the quest for money have led many individuals to live a life full of stress and anxiety. People are complaining of anxiousness, sleeplessness, digestive problems, and various medical ailments in different parts of the body, due to the unbearable work load. This eventually leads to stress. So what is stress? Stress refers to the worries and tensions that you face due to the difficulties in life.

Strenuous and repetitive physical work such as the loading and unloading of machinery can cause physical strain and stress on the body. But it is usually the continual work at a computer desk in a room with little natural or clean air, which can take its toll on the emotional well being of an individual. Anxiety and depression are often the result. People are also feeling stressed out due to the strict targets and high expectations set by their employer. In some companies there exists unspoken rules with regard to what is considered a sign of commitment to the job. For example, some individuals feel pressurized when it comes to taking annual leave, as there is an underlying feeling that it is not really acceptable to take a holiday.

When an individual is unable to maintain a balance in work and life and strives diligently in the organizational setting to the detriment of life outside the work place, the following symptoms of stress may occur: psychological, behavioral and medical consequences such as frequent headaches, nausea, giddiness, short temper, increase in blood pressure, insomnia plus many more problems. Working too much and neglecting one’s health and well-being are often causes of anxiety and depression.

There is often a lack of care with regard to employee well-being and a stigma attached to anyone who is seen to be suffering from stress and may need to take time off work. So now, how to relieve stress?

The best possible method to reduce anxiety and stress is to maintain a work life balance. If you are able to keep a balance between your professional and personal life, it is more likely that you will feel fulfilled, relaxed and get the time necessary to recharge your batteries. Balance between professional and personal life will mean different things to different people. So it is important to be really clear about what the term balance means to you as an individual.

There are many techniques and strategies to help you can acquire a balance in work and life. In the work place, task and time management strategies, flexible working hours, relaxation and breaks exercise, and working from home may offer a solution. These can help to improve job satisfaction, physical and emotional health and well-being, and the feeling of being valued within the company. When applying for any job it is often a good idea to research the extent of employee welfare within the company, so that you can see how well your ideals of how you wish to be treated are matched.

Another effective measure to reduce stress and anxiety is through meditation and yoga. These are not necessarily tough workouts (depending upon the style of Yoga you choose), but simple exercises that give peace and relaxation to the mind, body and soul. These have been proven to be wondrous in relieving stress and in anxiety treatment.

The most important thing in trying to find balance in work and life is to find strategies and tools that work for you. Often it is just a case of trying something new as we all can become too accustomed to the same way of dealing with a situation. Also it is crucial to take one small step at a time rather than feeling like there has to be a complete overhaul to achieve the balance you are looking for.
