With winter round the corner, many people in the northern hemisphere face a strange dilemma each January. New Year is the time when people make fresh fitness resolutions and feel eager to lose weight. However, at the same time they face a bitter winter, when all the body asks for is a cozy place and lots of food. The result is that a many of these weight loss resolutions flop in the first month itself, and by the time February comes along, about half the group has jumped the ship. In this context, the TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) club based in the US has called for a change in outlook. Rather than grudge winter, they ask people to embrace it as a unique opportunity to get in some fun and exercise together.

1. Exciting Winter Activities for Weight Loss

Actually the concept of winter activities is not new. Since time immemorial, people have been using the months of snowfall to participate in some fun family activities. The most popular ones amongst these are snowball fights, building snow angels and snowmen, building snow castles or igloos, shoveling, playing disc golf, or even participating in a game of Frisbee, just to name a few. Now, it turns out that these activities are not just opportunities for some winter bonding and fun, but also excellent calorie burning exercises. For instance, an average 150 pound man would burn 285 calories an hour just building a snowman, 319 calories during an hour of snowball fighting and 214 calories during a creative hour of making snow angels. So, if you have lost any fun family traditions, you should start thinking about reviving them.

2. Winter Sports

Apart from these fun activities, there are also a whole set of winter sports that give your body an exhilarating cardiovascular workout. Winter hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and ice-skating are as good for weight loss as any sport you may consider during the summers. If you haven’t tried any of these winter sports, it may be a fun adventure picking up and learning something new. No harm done if you lose a few pounds in the process!

3. Going Outdoors in Snow

If you are planning to go outdoors to lose weight fast and get in some winter fun, there are a few things you should keep in mind. The most important is to drink enough water. You may forget this crucial need of your body because of the cold, but the last thing you want is to end up dehydrated after an hour of exercise. That is a serious health risk. Also, keep your feet, your head, and your hands covered and warm. Besides, it is important to dress in layers. Lastly, don’t forget to stay abreast with the weather forecast. If rough weather is expected, hold your enthusiasm and stay indoors.

If you do end up changing your outlook towards winter, you may already have won half the battle in achieving your weight loss resolution. So, here’s wishing you lots of snow fun!
