Comment spam is a term used by spam blacklist servers to refer to a broad category of spambot or spammer postings which abuse web-based forms to post unsolicited advertisements as comments on forums, blogs, and online guestbooks. In the case of blogs, spam is also called blog comment spam, comment spam, or social spam and is a form of spamdexing. It is usually done by posting random comments, copying material from elsewhere, or promoting commercial services to blogs, wikis, or other publicly accessible online discussion boards.

As a matter of fact, adding links that point to the spammer’s website artificially increases the site’s search engine ranking on those where the popularity of the URL contributes to its implied value. An increased ranking further results in the spammer’s commercial site being listed ahead of other sites for certain searches, increasing the number of potential visitors and paying customers.

Comment spam is quite harmful to your blog/ site as:

Google cracks down on bad links:
This includes the sites that buy links as well as the sites that allow them. Comment spam makes it look like you allow bad comments on your site.

It makes your site less appealing:
Comment spam on your blog creates a bad impression on your visitors. This makes the visitors think that no one is actively taking care of your blog since it seems to be littered with spam. It shows a lack of moderation and makes your blog/ site less enticing.

It holds your credibility at stake:
Blog comment spam creates situations where a reader clicks on a link to another comment on a website and is directed somewhere he/she doesn’t want to be. Therefore, you should not allow anybody to link to any website in your comments as it may cause your readers to lose faith in you.

Hope the post serves the purpose of enlightening you about the blog spam.
