Although unforeseen opportunities may appear as you succeed, a goal is not accomplished unless given forethought and targeted as follows:
1. You decided to do it (answered the question why?)
Unless the why has logic and emotion intertwined it will fall flat. The logic resembles gears in a car and emotion is the energy. If dragging, emotion gives you a jump start to allow logic to do the work needed.
2. It empowers your mindset (produces productivity)
A goal causes action. Action produces results and the accumulation of results accomplishes a goal.
3. It makes you feel good
As you take action and produce results it actually makes you feel good.
How many times have you had a goal and for whatever reason it wasn’t accomplished? The two goal killers are:
Doubt or Disbelief
The only person who needs to believe it’s possible is you. If you think or talk yourself out of it then you are self sabotaging.
Negativity
Know who will be positive towards your goal and those who will be negative. Don’t discuss your goal with the negativity group. It’s not that they are negative people. It’s just based on what they know and perceive of the situation. Their mindset is locked into negativity towards your goal. The only way to remove their negativity is by accomplishing your goal. Then they’ll be the ones sitting in a circle or talking with others about how you proved them wrong.
Once you clear the killer hurdles the four goal enhancers are:
Time
You must make time in your schedule to work on your goal. It’s not something to be done whenever you feel like it.
Consistency
Then you must consistently add and build upon “what works” and remove the “doesn’t work” components. For example, let’s say your goal is to be a good free throw shooter. You know how to set your feet, how to hold the ball, where to put your elbow when shooting, however, in your follow through your hand is not being put through the basket. Get rid of the bad follow through and make sure to put your hand through the basket. Make sure you follow through in business too.
Intelligence
As you make strides different situations, challenges, and obstacles to stymie your accomplishments will appear. See this as an opportunity or signal meaning adjustments and new intelligence (knowledge) is needed to go further. If needed, get help. This is where a lot of people fall victim to the goal killers and therefore abandon their goals because they don’t want to think. Think! It makes a world of difference. A good book to jog your mindset is What Got You There Won’t Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith.
Rejuvenation
Regularly review the progress you’ve made so you don’t forget about your goal. With rejuvenation the energy and excitement you first had in accomplishing your goal is rekindled.
