Scorpios have extremely important work to do in life, so I suppose it's only fair to indulge them for being so reserved and solitary. It's not easy being the most powerful sign in the Zodiac. All that potential is a tremendous responsibility. The contributions Scorpio makes, generation after generation, to the progress of humankind are undeniable ... and crucially important. Scorpio has tremendous access to vision and wisdom and a natural talent for using fundamental creative power to build new structures and make changes to the existing arrangements of life that result in improvements of amazing worth.

Remember that word "improvement." It's the theme of what Scorpios are here to accomplish. And therein is the key to how Scorpios and their contributions fit into the ongoing creative cycle of development. Scorpio is concerned with mutual assets, community property, joint resources, investments, "unearned income" such as inheritances and dividends -- in other words, holdings and wealth shared and controlled in partnerships with other people.

Scorpio exists to form and implement visions of greater possibilities, to join forces with others and build -- according to its own design -- structures, assets and associations that yield greater results for the community than either contributor could accomplish on his own. Scorpio takes raw materials ... and from that fundamental creative energy, it fashions miracles. It is an awesome power. The other side of the coin, however, rarely produces so many nice smiles and nods of approval, because the unavoidable truth that Scorpio understands so well is that for birth to occur, and new life to flourish, death must come to what is old, useless, obsolete, ineffective, outmoded and exhausted.

Death and birth are two halves of the same circle. One cannot ... cannot ... exist without the other. And this is the true and awesome abstract work that Scorpio facilitates, the manifestation of this theme of death and rebirth, destruction and resurrection -- in the name of "improvement." Clearly, this is an energy to use wisely. It has tremendous potential for disastrous abuse and irreversible injury. And just as clearly, there is a definite connection between this sad fact of life ... and the famous private, mysterious, dark side of the Scorpio character.

Scorpios are people of deep passions and unprecedented "sensitivity" -- as that word applies to contact with one's own emotional landscape. But there is a necessary ruthlessness to their characters as well, a willful insistence on having their own way where their lives, visions, and destinies are concerned. It's a quality that simply must be part of the basic energy charged with handling the essential but highly precarious tasks that go with this stage of life and the unfolding of creative evolution.

The potential for karmic consequence, both positive and negative, exists at every turn, and hangs on many of the choices Scorpios face throughout their lives. This kind of power is obviously never given to a soul who lacks the basic wherewithal to use it properly. And the subliminal message it broadcasts constantly accounts for the awe in which Scorpio as a sign is traditionally held. People remember, relate to, and respect Scorpio's involvement with sexual power, potency, and desire. That certainly is the "dimestore book" description of what Scorpio is all about. But that is just one facet of this abstract principle -- and an incomplete, sensationalized one at that. The whole picture deals with "creation from nothing but the raw materials of mutual resources."

That is the process through which sex as an instinct and an act ... ultimately creates the profound wonder of new life. And this is Scorpio's gift -- and privilege: to be the alchemist whose original vision and the will to see it exist in reality ushers "improvement" and "new expressions of life" into the material world. It deserves tremendous respect. It is not, however, an occupation that makes for charming dinner table conversation. These literal "life and death" issues are not for the squeamish or the overly sentimental. Scorpio has a renowned contempt for weakness, inefficiency, nostalgia, and "tradition." And so the discretion and secrecy surrounding the work it does ... remains.

Rather than deal with the hysteria and objections of signs that would hinder the "progress" it is mandated to construct -- Scorpio energy labors quietly, often out of sight, until the necessary "revisions" are ready to unveil ... and, with that, life is forever changed -- as surely as a new birth alters forever the structure of the family into which it comes.

Scorpios are resourceful, judgmental people ... qualities that befit them as the "artists" who work in these vital media. The often destructive and painful quality of the work they do -- on and for themselves as well as in the outside world -- results in the infamous solitary personality that is not easily known. They are controlling and possessive -- for they frequently feel driven to achieve their goals to the point of obsession. And they are capable of great endurance once they set their minds to an accomplishment.

They are willful people with intense emotions ... as interested in self-improvement as in changing and refining conditions in the outside world. They are dynamic and profound in their personal expressions -- players in the game of life where the stakes can be very, very important. Scorpios are "all or nothing" people. They do nothing halfway. They do not deal in trivialities ... and are known for implementing "extreme solutions" ... sometimes when milder measures just might accomplish the task at hand. Their rationale is: They can't afford the time and inconvenience involved with failure. They aim for what they are sure will work.

They possess an energy built for dealing with fundamental transformation, and the upheaval, crisis, emergency, and "rebuilding" such changes inevitably bring. They understand the nature of life at a deep, instinctive level ... as it is only one of the mysteries they work to unravel. In fact, they love solving mysteries and tracking down answers to secrets. They take on all manner of necessary and esoteric research. They do believe knowledge is power -- and they crave the possession. They are natural spies ... and natural psychotherapists. They understand human motivation -- as a result of seeking to understand themselves.

They often undergo several substantial personality changes during one lifetime ... as if they are packing the experiences of several lives into the space of one. They embody the energy that brings about necessary improvement and progress in the world. They are most assuredly a force to be reckoned with ... and respected.
