Whilst being under immense stress I developed a way to escape from it, which was so powerful that I wanted to share it with others and now I know it is helping lots of people.

Stress can hit us in so many ways at almost any time; it could be a late plane or train, an important e-mail arriving just as you want to leave the office or a family member being taken ill suddenly.

The more stress you have, particularly if you have had a prolonged stressful event in your life, the easier it is in the future to get stressed over lesser things.

Now we have the credit crunch, the whole economic system is under immense pressure so problems can erupt suddenly from nowhere.

So what can you do to cope?

Well, in my case I was supplying business briefings on countries to airlines and then we had 9/11. This had a catastrophic effect. Airlines have been short of money and going bust ever since and we, as one of their suppliers, were one of the first commercial casualties. They wouldn’t part with money, we employed journalists around the world, our house was on the line and, yes, stress with a capital S became our daily bread.

So what did I do? Well, I knew there was one place where I felt safe and not threatened, where nobody could get to me or find me. I escaped to the woods and melted in with nature. Initially, it was also to save money and shoot a pigeon or rabbit for the pot but soon something wonderful started to happen. As I was lying quiet and waiting for pigeons to come in to roost, I started seeing foxes close to me and then wild deer. I became enchanted with nature and I was getting just too close to kill so I swapped my rifle for a video film camera.

Over the next five years I had so many close encounters with wild deer, badgers, foxes and God’s bountiful creations that I wanted to share these magical moments with others. So, with the help of friends, I learned how to make films. My first film was called “Wild Deer Watching”, made to help people see and enjoy wild deer when out walking.

I knew that, as soon as I went into a wood, it was like walking though a veil where all my troubles were left behind so I wanted to make a film to capture that magic. I first made a ten-minute demo, which I showed to stress experts and it played in a hospital recovery room for three months. Armed with the feed-back from the stress experts and patients, I made the film.

Calmer by Nature is a film available on DVD and, although it was designed to help people deal with stress by using beautiful nature scenes, I now know from testimonials that it helps people with many different health issues. It is just a pure nature film without people or any human voice or even music. The magical and stunning footage is accompanied only by nature's stillness and her calls and sounds.

You can see a 3-minute clip of the film, which runs for 57 minutes by going to www.calmerbynature.com

This DVD sells to hospitals under license and has also been bought by over a thousand individuals, many of whom have given me feed-back, which now makes me realise it helps, and is appreciated by, people with many different health problems. It has of course also helped many elderly people who love nature but can no longer get out and enjoy it and, importantly, their carers.

The film takes the viewer on a magical journey, following a mountain stream to the sea and along the way has close encounters with wild deer, badgers and nesting woodpeckers, all entirely unaware of any human presence, and then on to fields of wild poppies and hedgerows bursting with spring flowers and birdsong and trout in gin clear streams with ducklings, ending at the coast with rock-pools and curlews.

Below is some of the feed-back I have received:

Hi Barry,
I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your Calmer by Nature DVD. Having been through a stressful time lately, it was just what I needed to calm me down.
In fact, so relaxing did I find it the first time I watched it that I found myself dropping off to sleep and had to make a real effort to stay awake the second time so as not to miss any of it!
I particularly liked the fact that there was no commentary or background music, just natural sounds. Great stuff.
Regards Anne

Dear Barry.
I discovered your DVD thanks to Bel Mooney who writes for the Daily Mail. She said that your DVD Calmer by Nature should be played on a loop in every hospital, care home and psychiatric unit in the country also airports and businesses she even suggested it should be used in schools for disruptive children. I really bought it for the benefit of my 7 year old grandson who though he comes from a stable loving family is realy quite restless. I have yet to show it to him (I will let you know the result later). I put it on to see what it was all about when I was on my own on the afternoon of receiving the DVDI found it so calming that at the end I realised that I had been asleep so missed a good slice of it! It really is quite wonderful and I thank you for it. Regards
Sheila
