People may be afraid of alternative medicine but they should not be. it is a valid form of treatment that has been available since the beginning of time. Our ancient ancestors could not run to the medicial center at the first sign of a sniffle. They had to learn to deal with any and everything with whatever was available to them in nature.
I have studied alternative medicine and healing since the 70's. At first I was a bit skeptical but when I required something that could not be provided by mainstream medical centers myself, I sought out a Chinese doctor who owns an alternative medical clinic in Reno, Nevada. His mother and father, both physicians, came to America many years ago after the change in government forced many free thinking Chinese to flee. They started a clinic based on Chinese medicine as well as mainstream medicine and it thrived. People who could not be cured or treated by the normal channels began to flock to them for help. Sierra Integrative Medicine now serves people from all over the world with alternatives not available at the corner clinic. I am not a physician but I have completed the ND courses and studied the Chinese Medica. I have studied the effects of hyperbaric oxygen on tought illnesses and infections and seen for myself what it can do for seizure disorders. I have introduced friends with severe pain to accupuncture and massage as a way to ease the pain without harmful and addictive drugs. I, myself, use these same treatements when needed.
In my studies I have learned that many of our manufactured drugs are based on natural ingredients that have been harvested from the rain forests and other areas of nature. Groups of indigenous people that still live in the Amazon know that the destruction of their rain forests will be the downfall of medicine. Their healing arts have been passed down from the elders in the tribe to those who are willing to learn the old ways. Many of the old ways are preferrable to the mind numbing drugs that are pushed on unsuspecting people each day.
In order to receive the best care possible, each person must accept responsibility for his/her own health. We must help educate each person so that he/she can make a rational decision about healthcare.
I have been a "New Age" guru for many years. I began as a student of Edgar Cayce in the early 1960's. At that time, I learned not to talk about my fascination with alternative medicine and ways of thinking. People instantly thought there was something a little "weird" about me if I mentioned that I could hypnotize someone just by putting my hand on their shoulders and speaking softly to them. If I ever managed to talk about "hands-on healing", I would be assurred that I would be laughed out fo the room. Still, I studied and learned and found others who believed like I did. My reward has been that my health is reasonably good except for the inevitable arthritis and a wonky digestive system. My husband is 84 and looks 50. We are careful what we eat and put into our bodies. I often write about alternative medicines and methods in my job as a freelance writer.
