Dr. Henson has developed Substance Abuse and Family Counseling Centers throughout the Midwest. He introduced the “family illness” concept in outpatient treatment in the early 1970’s, recognizing that “three out of four who suffered from substance abuse didn’t have the addiction”; i.e., the spouse and children.
As a television show guest, Dr. Henson has shared insights about intervention strategies, substance abuse, and couples/marital communication and therapy. He has served as adjunct faculty member for the University of Wichita’s College of Health Related Professions, the University of Iowa Social Work Department and the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Henson held the position of chairperson with the Wichita-Sedgwick County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Advisory Board and chaired the Kansas Alcoholism Counselors Certification Committee in its early development.
Dr. Henson attended grade school, in part, in Colorado Springs. He spent many summers in Manitou Springs and Chipita Park where his family maintained a cabin. Growing up he spent several years living and working on a farm in central Kansas.
Dr. Henson graduated from East High School and Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas prior to "coming home to Colorado". He served in and was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at El Toro, California in the Third Marine Air Wing. He has four children, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Dr. and Mrs. Henson enjoy sight seeing, skiing and camping in the Colorado mountains as well as the variety of enriching cultural and artistic experiences available in the Denver area.
As a wounded healer (dysfunctional family of origin and abuse), Dr. Henson is energized in helping individuals and couples achieve recovery and quality of life. He shares exciting, meaningful and short term therapy models for Traumatic Stress (Acute, Chronic and PTSD) and Couples/Marriage Therapy.
It’s not what happens to us that causes our problems, it’s how we "think" about it that continues to keep us stuck in our emotional pain. As a wounded healer, I’m energized in helping individuals and couples achieve recovery with trauma and relationship issues.
