Born in Australia in 1955 Barry is from a family of ten children – eight boys and two girls. Following completion of his Senior Education in 1973, Barry travelled around the country working in a wide variety of jobs and occupations. In the process, Barry had to learn how to survive financially as his circumstances changed. This often involved re-inventing himself. Initially, Barry worked laying ballast for Queensland Railway. It was hard, physical work in the unrelenting, hot Australian sun. Barry figured that if he was going to do this sort of back-bending work then it might as well be away from the sun. This thinking soon saw him working underground as a coal miner in Central Queensland!
Following his quest for adventure and self-improvement, Barry took to the highways and byways from one side of Australia to the other. During this time he worked in all sorts of occupations: labourer; concrete layer; bus driver; salesman; recruitment officer; car detailer; storeman; pest control operator; barman; franchise operator; small business owner (cleaning company); finance company representative to name but a few. Some time later Barry studied Meat Inspection, Teaching, and Psychology before finally commencing a Law Degree in 1984. By this time, he was married with two young children. For the next five years Barry worked as an articled law clerk by day and studied of a night and on weekends. It was tough and finances were extremely tight.
After completing his Bachelor of Law Degree in November1989, Barry was admitted to practice as a lawyer of the Supreme Courts of Queensland, New South Wales and the High Court of Australia. Later, he was also admitted to practice, both as a lawyer and barrister, of the Supreme Courts of Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. Barry was also a member of the A.T.L.A. (American Trial Lawyers Association), a member of A.P.L.A. (Australian Plaintiff Lawyers Association) and a member of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia. As a Family law expert and divorce attorney, Barry acted predominantly for women who were often referred to him by Womens Shelters.
Barry operated his own law practice, in partnership, from February 1990 until October 1999. From this time on he operated on his own account until his retirement from law in June 2002.
