Fifty Years - That Long?
Marriage - now that's a state that is simple to enter but complex to stay in. At age fifteen when I married the love of my young life, marriage was an idyllic state of romance and contentment - or so I thought. Little did I realize marriage required work, determination, diligence, compromise, and self-sacrificing love.
With God's help I learned. From a shallow understanding of what love and marriage is all about, my husband Steve and I have grown together to a true comprehension of what love is - one that far outshines Hollywood's version. Enjoying the good times and enduring the bad, our union has grown day by day. That knot now is so tight and firm, not even death could break it.
Steve and I celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary June 19th - that's the golden one, you know. A friend commented, "I can't believe you two have been married half a century."
I replied, "Don't say it that way; that sounds like such a long time. We must be very old." But when you add fifteen and fifty, it's only sixty-five, so I'm really not that old; I just have a lot of miles on me.
I don't have any idea how much longer God will allow us to stay on this Earth together, but I'd like to sign on for another fifty and keep growing and learning and loving.
