One of the most popular contraceptive drug, Yaz has been linked to many life threatening side effects including pulmonary embolism, deep vain thrombosis and gall bladder diseases. It is now being linked to Hyperkalemia too. Hyperkalemia is a condition in which the patient develops a high level of potassium in the blood.

Yaz is an oral contraceptive pill. It is used by women for birth control. It stops ovulation in a woman. It also thickens uterus and cervical lining, causing difficulty in fertilization. Hence it helps in preventing pregnancy. Doctors prescribe it other purposes too. It is used for treatment of mild acne in adult woman. Yaz is also used to treat the premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) symptoms. These symptoms can be anxiety, depression, irritability, lack of concentrating, lack of energy etc. Sleep or appetite changes, tenderness in breast, joint or muscle pain, headache, and weight gain are other symptoms of PMDD. Yaz is manufactured by Bayer Healthcare. The pharmaceutical company also manufactures Yasmin, an oral contraceptive in the same line.

Yaz can lead to birth defects in an unborn baby, if it is taken by a pregnant woman. Hence it is advisable to not use Yaz in pregnancy. It has been also linked with development of blood clots; hence it is advisable to avoid Yaz if a patient has a history of stroke or blood clot, circulation problems or a heart valve disorder. Breast or uterine cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, kidney or liver disease, an adrenal gland disorder are other conditions, when use of Yaz should be avoided. One should not take Yaz if one has severe high blood pressure, migraine headaches, or a history of jaundice caused by birth control pills.

Yaz is also used for treatment of Endometriosis. In this disease there is growth of cells outside the uterus. The cells that grow within a woman’s uterus also start growing on the outer wall of uterus and can spread in whole pelvic region. It is also used to treat menstrual cycle disorder or irregularities.

The Bayer Healthcare is facing numerous lawsuits related to the side effects of Yaz. It is one of the most popular birth control pill, but after 2008 its sales took a dip due several reports of fatal side effects.

Recently new studies linked this medicine with Hyprkalemia too. Hyperkalemia refers to high level of potassium in the blood. Yaz contains drospirenone, a synthetic hormone equivalent to hormone progestin. This hormone hinders the normal salt balance in the body. It interferes with the normal mechanism of the body. This interference could lead to higher level of potassium in the blood. This condition is known as Hyperkalemia. This disease can lead to many life threatening health problems including heart related problems.

Many lawsuits have been filed against Bayer pharmaceuticals alleging that use of Yaz has resulted into Hyperkalemia and related problems in the patients. FDA has issued many warnings regarding side effects of Yaz and Yasmin. It has also warned Bayer about misleading information being provided to the patients about this medicine by the pharmaceutical company. FDA has planned a meeting with its advisory committees to discuss on fatal side effects of Yaz and other medicine in its line. If it decides to ban the drug or comes up with some hard line decision regarding side effects of these drugs, it will be a fatal blow for Bayer Healthcare. A decision against these medicines is surely going to be benefiting for several Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits.
