With all the press about the newest pharmaceutical drug Addyi to raise libido in women, I wondered what natural ways to raise libido were already available. As it turns out, people have been using natural means to raise libidos in both men and women since the beginning of, well, us.
Cultures from around the world have already tackled this question and have come up with time tested trials involving hundreds of thousands of real human beings using the natural pharmacy of leaves, seeds, bark and roots plus water; also known as tea! Now I don’t know about you, but to my way of thinking, the Creator of the Universe knows a thing or two about making stuff that, as smart as we are, mankind just can’t compete with. We have been given many gifts, and among these are medicinal and even culinary herbs and spices that do a great job of triggering those neurotransmitters that say “Let’s Get it On!”.
Ashwagandha has been used in India for thousands of years as an adaptogen (to balance the system) reduce stress and as natural libido booster. I had a young friend ask for my counsel when after the birth of her daughter her sex drive was in the cellar. I gave her a little zip lock bag of the herb (chopped roots-not to be confused with any other herbs transported in zip lock bags) and she reported back that both she and her husband LOVED the effects, and now use it regularly.  Bonus, that beautiful little girl now has a baby brother!
The Tupi tribe of northern Brazil discovered Catuaba bark hundreds of years ago and it is still the most popular of the Amazonian aphrodisiac herbs, and they have quite a few! Did you ever notice how happy these people always look in photos? It is prescribed to treat impotence in men and low libido in both men and women. Nice to know that nature included women’s needs in its pharmacy! Add Muira Puama Bark to the Catuaba and you get the 4th of July and New Year’s Eve fireworks rolled into one, often within 30 minutes. Muira Puama literally means “potency wood” and comes with a warning; the same warning that comes with Viagra: to seek medical attention if an erection lasts longer than 4 hours. I’m wondering how many people actually do this.
Epimedium, AKA Horny Goat Weed, has been used in China for centuries to treat erectile dysfunction and low libido with outstanding (pun intended) results! Like most herbal aphrodisiacs, it is effective for both men and women.
Tongkat Ali, from the forests of Malaysia, has been used with great success for hundreds of years by the indigenous peoples of that area. American author Chris Kilham also known as the Medicine Hunter, who has studied and tried many aphrodisiac herbs from around the world reports that for himself, Tongkat Ali is THE best sexual enhancement medicine bar none.
There are also many culinary herbs that can be added to any kind of tea that will stimulate our libidos.
Next time you make a pot of your favorite tea (coffee works too) throw in a few cloves, a cinnamon stick or a sprinkle of nutmeg. These will trigger those neurotransmitters that transmit feelings of happiness, a stronger sex drive, pleasure and bonding.
Or you could go all out and make yourself a pot of Chai tea that is absolutely full of aphrodisiac spices including Cardamom, Cinnamon, Cloves, Peppercorns, Ginger and Vanilla Bean.
Hmmm, Chai tea originated in India; Population 1.2 Billion; could there be a correlation?
