Bill Gates said the internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow. With the growing numbers of people online and the popularity of the most frequented sites it certainly makes sense to use this exceptional tool in your modern day job search. The internet has given you huge freedom to access the information and resources you want at any time of day or night, thus fitting in with your busy life. Companies know this and many of them who are publicly recruiting (some companies hide their recruitment behind third parties, more about this later in the week) advertise their current vacancies both on their websites and on job boards. Figures I read recently claim that the internet is being used for 48% of all hires. Therefore, it is reasonable to say, half of all the jobs you might want are online. So, how do you find them? You can look on generic jobsites. Companies such as monster.com are popular with both employers and recruiters. Does the job you are looking for have an online industry magazine? If so do they have a vacancies page? Many of them do and of course, all the vacancies listed are targeted to your chosen profession. What about online newspapers with great vacancy sections? Often you can add a profile of what you are looking for and the site will email you when something relevant is posted. Can you do reverse searching and get the person with the vacancy to find you? How about putting your profile on linkedin.com (we will discuss this in more detail later). Are there any specific companies that you would like to work for? Do they have any interesting vacancies on their website or a generic send us your profile and we will let you know when we have something option?
