So, let me ask you a question, are you as amazed with the mind, the human mind, as I am? It is so complex and so powerful that it’s hard to believe. Early on I took an interest to it when I was younger and overhead the statement, “mind over matter”. Just for fun I would try to practice and flex my mental powers in situations. For instance, if I had a headache, I would try to convince myself that there was no headache, that it didn’t exist and whollah, no headache. Little ashamed to admit this. But on the flip side of that, there are instances where I would wake up in the morning (feeling perfectly fine – just not wanting to go to school) and I would literally convince myself into having an upset stomach. (I remember doing this rather than just lying because if I felt sick I wouldn’t feel guilty about staying home)
The key in both of these instances was that I “bought in”.
Maybe its cause I was younger and “didn’t know any better”. For one reason or another, I just believed. I can’t tell you why, I just bought it – I was sold. You see, it’s this Belief thing that’s the kicker. That’s where a lot of us fall short.
So, whether we’re talking business, personal life, sports, whatever - we NEED goals. Our mind needs personal goals to work towards. Our subconscious mind is an automatic, goal-striving machine. Without a target, status quo is the default. Change and personal growth are then impossible.
So, let’s just jump ahead and assume you have a personal goal that your working towards. Let’s say it’s a big goal. Now, the million dollar question is, do you believe that you will accomplish it? In your heart of hearts, do you have faith that you will reach it? Would you bet your life on it? Or…do you have this goal but are kinda negative…and really don’t expect it to materialize…but you’re gonna keep trying for good measure.
If your answer is the latter, where has that gotten you? When has half-assing anything gotten you anywhere? Hey, don’t get me wrong, I understand. That was me! I know all too well. Why the heck do you think I started this website – to help share and pass on the knowledge and wisdom I’ve received. One of the most profound truths I’ve heard is, you don’ t get what you want, you get what you expect.
As Dan Kennedy once said, “Then why did you waste any effort on it? If you don’t honestly expect success today, why not roll over and go back to sleep?” What a perfect statement. Expect to win or why even show up, just stay in bed. Why do we want things and set goals, but not believe 100% that we can achieve them? Are we kinda hedging our bet just in case we fail? Are we basing the future off of some past failure of ours? Are we listening and believing someone else’s negative comments? This then is where our thinking, our beliefs and our self image come into play.
So, what I’d like you to do is ask yourself the tough question of “WHY”. Why do you believe you can’t accomplish your goal? Why aren’t you EXPECTING to succeed? Begin to really look at your beliefs. Ask yourself these question:
•Why do I believe that I can’t?
•Is that based on fact or opinion/assumption?
Begin to look at your current beliefs.
Because alot of what we think comes from others, we all need to stand guard at the gates of our mind and examine what we take in. Know that when someone tells you that “you can’t do _____”, they really mean that “THEY can’t do _____.” So, be like a grumpy TSA agent at the airport and really give thoughts a thorough “pat down”.
What I’m saying is don’t blindly accept people’s thoughts and words. Are they factual or somebody’s mere opinion. Recognizing the difference is the key.
So, examine and start getting rid of those negative beliefs you’re holding onto. We’ll next replace them and add more positive, fulfilling ones. All I can say is this is going to be really exciting.
All the best,
RK
