Tired of having friends get mad at you for no reason? Or having your boss shout at you even if you don't know what's wrong? Well, maybe a misunderstanding in communication between you and other people has occurred. What you tried to convey may not be what other people understood.
But now that the damage is done, it's time to resolve the problem. Misunderstanding in communication can be solved with just a little courage and perseverance.
Step 1: Know The Cause.
The first thing you have to do is find out which part of your statement they might have misunderstood.
Try to backtrack every single sentence that you have said and think of any reasons why they have reacted negatively in the first place. Once you have identified the cause, the solutions will follow.
Step 2: Approach Them.
In some cases, misunderstanding in communication might make your friend (or whoever it is you have been talking to) very angry because of what they misunderstood from your words.
As a result, you would likely feel afraid to approach them. However, know the fact that you cannot solve this problem without approaching that person, even if you're afraid of being yelled at or worse.
Step 3: Convince Them.
If the other party gets angry or yells at you, don't get mad too, as that would only worsen what damage has been done.
When it comes to resolving any misunderstanding in communication, you need to remain calm at all times. Also, if your words sound sincere, they will feel more comfortable listening and conversing with you.
During the conversation, the other person might talk back. In that case, try to stop and listen to them, so that they will feel more open and will be able to discuss your problems.
Step 4: Assure Them.
Some people might not be comfortable even after you've convinced them, especially if what they have misunderstood sounds insulting. In that case, assure them that everything is now understood. Make them feel comfortable with the point that you really want to show.
Step 5: Learn From It.
Now that you have resolved the misunderstanding, try not to repeat the same mistake again. Remember that prevention is better than having a cure, and besides, we shouldn't let them go through all that again.
Misunderstanding in communication can be very damaging for relationships, but they are not without a cure. If you find yourself in such a situation, just follow these steps and everything can be resolved.
