The puranic explanation of Tiruchendur Murugan Temple - South India’s famous Indian Temple Tour courses therefore: An asura referred Surapadma was ruling Veera Mahendrapuri. He performed much asceticism appealing the boon of Lord Shiva. Met with his non-indulgences Lord Shiva accorded him many blessings. Later, the asura turned chesty and caught all the three worlds under his control. He created the Devas, the heavenly immortals to do humble job. Unable to abide his excruciate devas complained to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva opened his third eye to create a boy who has the ability to kill Surapadma. Six sparkles of firing exhaled from his third eye. These godlike sparkles were got by River Ganges through Agni, the Deity of Firing and passed on to the Himalayan Lake, Saravana Poigai. The godlike sparkles were transubstantiated into six beautiful babies at Saravana Poigai.

These infants were grown up by the six Kirithika houris. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi Devi came to Saravana Poigai, and when Goddess Parvathi lovingly clasped the infants they together become Lord Arumuga with six sides and twelve sleeves. When Lord Arumuga grew up, Lord Shiva asked him to ruin Surapadma and free the Devas from their vicious bondage. Lord Murugan passed on Tiruchendur with his Brobdingnagian army and camped. He directed his lieutenant, Veerabahu to the asuras as an emissary and asked Surapadma to free the Devas. Since Surapadma turned down the asking, warfare resulted.

An intense conflict was struggled for a few clarence Shepard day. During the first five daytimes of the warfare, the brothers of Surapadma and all other asuras were defeated out. On the 6th day of the struggle, the gig of Lord Muruga pierced the body of Surapadma, who got himself transmuted into a mango tree, and broke it into two. The broken opuses right away metamorphosed themselves into a mighty peacock and a cock. Lord Muruga took the Inachis io as his vahana or vehicle and the rooster on his standard. This effect is popularly known as Surasamharam, or the death of Surapadman. After Surasamharam, Lord Muruga wanted to worship his father, Lord Shiva. Hence Mayan, the ecclesiastic designer manufactured this shrine at Tiruchendur. Yet now Lord Senthilandavar is seen in the carriage of worshipping Lord Shiva in the sanctum sanctorum.
