Pfizer Faces Wrongful Death Case Related To Zoloft

A case of wrongful death related to Zoloft has been filed against Pfizer in Southern District of New York. Paula Peska and Scott Day, a couple from Missouri has filed a wrongful death case against Pfizer. The case was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on October 26.

Zoloft is an antidepressant drug. Zoloft is manufactured by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. It is used for treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD, panic disorder or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), another stress related disorder, social anxiety and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Doctors prescribe it for other mood related or stress related disorders.

Use of Zoloft could lead to many severe side effects. It can result into suicidal thoughts or attempts, unusual bruising or bleeding, hallucinations, memory loss, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness and irritability, hallucinations, memory loss, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness and irritability. Studies have linked it to severe birth defects. These birth defects may be related to Lung, Heart, Abdomen, Skeletal defects, Neural defects or Skull and face deformation. Birth defects such as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborn, Anal atresia (complete or partial closure of the anus), Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Cleft lip and cleft palate, Spinal bifida, Cardiac (heart) defects, Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Pulmonary Stenosis, Pulmonary (lung) defects, Club foot, Infant omphalocele and Neural-tube defects could be a resultant of use of Zoloft during pregnancy.

There are many Zoloft lawsuits related to birth defects being filed. The above said lawsuit alleged that Paula Peska was prescribed with Zoloft, while being pregnant. This caused severe birth defects including heart problems in new born baby. Ultimately the baby died due to these severe side effects. The child was born on October 27, 2009 and died the very next day.

The baby was born with Tetralogy of Fallot, truncus arteriosus, ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, confluent branch pulmonary arteries, pulmonary valve atresia and other cardiopulmonary defects. The lawsuit alleges that all these defects were due to use of Zoloft by the mother during pregnancy.

The lawsuit blames that the Pfizer was aware of the fact that use of Zoloft during pregnancy could lead to fatal birth defects. But it did not provide this information to the consumers for a long time. Many studies also reveal use of Zoloft during pregnancy increases the risk birth defects that could be fatal. The lawsuit is blaming Pfizer for the wrongful death of the newbo
baby of Paula Peska and Scott Day. They held the pharmaceutical company liable for the tragic incidence. It states that it was Pfizer’s responsibility to inform patients regarding birth defects, which could be caused by use of Zoloft. It should have given a warning to pregnant mothers or women planning to have a baby, on its label.
