"Time Mapping goes inside the goal setter, to where the many gears and fascinating inner workings are all busy moving and engaging with one another. It makes sense of the chaos and slows down the panic long enough to put together a clear picture of what really matters." From the Time Mapping Book
In Time Mapping, there have been many unique inventions for goal keeping and self-improvement in general. Next-Level goal setting came to be when I became aware that there was a disturbing trend with my friends or clients who consistently failed at their goals. It seemed that no matter what system they used, they were destined to fail.
I kept reading the guru books for ideas of how to help and the general consensus was that if one system didn’t work for you, you should keep trying until you find one that would.
My observation, though, was that it was the goal setter who was in need of fixing, not the goal setting system. And we goal setters are complicated. It takes time, and a map to figure us out.
n some extreme goal setter cases, it seemed that priorities and intentions were scattered like dead leaves in October.
Time Mapping goes inside the goal setter, to where the many gears and fascinating inner workings are all busy moving and engaging with one another. It makes sense of the chaos and slows down the panic long enough to put together a clear picture of what really matters.
Once the picture has been taken, we have it! We have something to look at and use as a compass to navigate us through the distractions. We can give ourselves a direction and a plan, a course can be charted to a more fulfilling life and debris swept out of our way.
That’s what next-level goal setting is, it’s winding the main spring and aligning the balance wheel and gears so that we keep better time (I’m sticking with the watch metaphor). Next-level goal setting is about calibrating the goal setter… success with goals will follow.
By way of example, I keep thinking about a client who I'll call "Bob". Bob was working a job he had for about 16 years or so if I remember right. He didn't like his job, but it was "easy" and it "paid good", so he stayed with it. Bob's goal was to spend more time with his family and doing recreational things with them. Since Bob's job was soaking up half of his waking hours, I asked him, "What is it you get out of this job? Is it making you a better person or bringing you closer to your goals?".
"No", he said. "I actually feel like an idiot working there."
"So, you're not becoming a better person there... why do you stay?" I asked.
"Because it pays great." he replied.
"What do you need 'great' pay for?"
"Oh, I don't know... (sarcastically) the house, the car, the food" laughing at my question now like I was a fool for asking.
"I've seen a lot of nice houses that cost less than this one... Is this house making you a better person?" I asked.
"Yes!" Adamantly.
"Better in what way?" I say.
"Better than someone with a worse house." He said this and then just looked at me like he regretted it.
"My house is nowhere near this nice." I said.
"No, I didn't mean that..." Now he's thinking.
"Bob, if this house makes you feel superior to anyone just because you bought it, I'd say we have to talk." At this point, I'm really not worried about hurting Bob's feelings because his wiring is so off that he needed someone to speak to him frankly. So I went on.
This went on for a while and I'm happy to say that a positive turn was made by Bob in the end, but this is a great example of someone so out of alignment with their passions and a true quality of life that they can't even reason with themselves. They are in denial of their own misery and they self medicate with materialistic things and status symbols. These are the goal setters that are most lost... and they are the most in need of Time Mapping and "next-level" goal setting.
