My mother has been a primary school teacher ever since I can remember. She absolutely loves it, well most of the time. When she was a little girl, a local journalist asked her what she wanted to be when she grew older. She told him she wanted to be a teacher and they ran an article on her, she actually still has a copy of the paper.

She trained to be a teacher at a college in Hull. She hated being away from home but desperately wanted to teach and so managed to complete the three year course. After qualifying, she returned to the Primary school where she had gone as a child. She went on to work there for over thirty years and retired age 57.

Even after she retired, she kept a close affiliation with the school. She worked there as a supply teacher and gave one to one lessons for children who needed that extra bit of help. She really enjoyed it but unfortunately she recently fell victim of all the government cut backs and the school could no longer afford her.

After a few weeks, I noticed that she seemed a little down. She said she was missing teaching but no school would employ a 60 year old woman. It was possibly true but we managed to find a solution.

My mother now offers private tuition for students at home. She has a New Peugeot Ion car so she is fairly flexible to travel within the community. She loves it and is making plenty of money. Maybe she should have done this years ago.
