Change is the theme of our times. We can either embrace it and proactively create the change we want to see or allow it to randomly come upon us. Either way, change will continue to be a part of our lives. Neuroscience can help us as leaders to learn how to optimally operate our truly amazing brain.

Change is an art as much as it is a science. We need to integrate our whole brain and mind. Both hemispheres are involved in the creative process. We have been repressing and leaving out our 'art' side - the right brain.

Trying to only be logical and predictable is a stumbling block to innovation. It is a sure sign of mental rigidity. We have tried to ignore the right-brain's contribution to innovation and our intelligence. Thanks to neuroscience, the right-brain - which is a metaphor of the heart - is beginning to receive its long overdue recognition.

We need to be able to integrate the various parts of our brain in order to integrate the various parts of our life into a whole with self-awareness. As I've become more self-aware, I've even been able to take my professional training in neuroscience-via my need to be able to diagnosis brain tumors and other neurologic diseases-into what I'm now doing as a speaker, facilitator, and executive coach. I use my creativity to translate my knowledge of the brain into my knowledge of human behavior and spiritual, emotional, mental and physical well-being.

If you reflect on your own life, you can find connections between your past skills and what your heart is longing to do now. I'm still all about 'restoring vision', only now it is in the "mind's eye". Our entire journey is a part of our life purpose if you can pause to reflect and see the patterns. Seeing the patterns in the whole picture makes change easier.

It is our right brain that is able to see the big picture context of our lives and helps us to muster up courage to connect with our spirit so that fear cannot overtake us. Understanding yourself and the gift of our powerful brain and mind to create our experience is a gift and opportunity from neuroscience. We just need to be able to apply it in real time, and not just intellectually name the parts of the brain.

There's no real-life application in that; it's just academic. Interesting, but still not practical. We need to apply it. Just as I applied my clinical neuroscience training to helping people restore health to their eyes and sometimes even save their lives, we can apply the neuroscience to business and personal development to help us to live healthier, happier, and more productive lives. To live our life in PEACE, not pieces. To live as a whole, contributing, purposeful human being. What are your thoughts about neuroscience and its application to leadership, business and reaching more of our true potential?
