In this article, Jeffrey Slayer shares his ideas on how people can become effective leaders despite certain challenges that come with leading.

Recognize the Existence of a Problem

The first step in solving a problem is by accepting its existence. For example, a business partner suddenly leaves your company for a big competitor. Disregarding people jumping ship will not make the problem go away. If you ignore the problem, it may get worse. You might wake up and find that majority of the individuals within your team has left for the other company. It is only natural to enter the business industry with a positive outlook. This optimism inspires us to work hard and strive for success.

However, you must also accept the reality that not everything will go according to your plans. Otherwise, you will end up denying there is a problem you have to solve and this will only compound it further. Whenever you encounter a problem, you need to admit its existence and then take action. After recognizing the existence of the problem, the next thing you need to do is to share it with your team. This way you can resolve any issue as a team. Taking on problems alone especially big ones can only lead to bigger setbacks. Having the help of other people will also allow you to solve the problem faster.

Determine the Cause

There’s always a reason behind every crisis. You have to make sure you find the main cause of the problem and keep yourself from focusing on the surface issues. If you do so, the solutions you apply will only be temporary. Evaluate the full structure of your company. See if there are things you need to improve or even remove. Your company will not completely learn from the crisis if you overlook the main cause. As a leader, you need to inform all the members of the company about the problem and ask for their help in finding the root cause of the issue. And as a team, everyone is responsible for finding a solution to the problem.

Solutions Aren’t Always Easy

Problems can happen in an instant and when you least expect it. It can also build up slowly that you fail to recognize it is already happening. If the problem is really big, you have to be prepared for a long and hard period of employing your solutions. Some solutions entail a complete overhaul of the entire business process of a company especially when the old process has become inefficient or outdated.

Introducing people to changes, particularly drastic ones, aren’t all that easy. But as a leader, it’s your job to explain new process to your team, handle questions and address concerns that may arise from changes within company processes.

In the same manner, there are times when the current system has to be changed to adapt to the continuous changes in the industry. Essentially, being an effective leader goes beyond being the assertive one in the group or being good at dictating everyone’s to-do list. It’s about being the central figure that inspires the team to do better and being on the forefront when it comes to resolving conflicts within the team and within the company.
