The upcoming generation of young adults is the first group to have lived their entire lives with computers. Current college students and twenty-somethings can generally remember their early grade school days, in which they still did research for reports in libraries. However, the set under fifteen is far more likely to have always had a personal computer at home and to be familiar with the internet. After growing up with computers as such a natural part of life, these children are more likely to be comfortable with new technologies, exposed to more ideas, and used to routine online connections.

Growing Up with an Understanding of Technology

Computers are only first in a list of modern technological devices that a typical tween can use. However, computers are one of the most significant advances as they are simply a way of life for this generation. As personal home computers became popular in the mid-1990s, kids of this generation have had great exposure to computers from a young age. Many of them are comfortable working their way around new programs, learning about new technological interfaces, and are open to change. Computers are natural to children in this generation in a way that is similar to the previous generation's comfort level with compact discs.

Exposure to New Ideas and Information

For children who have grown up with computers, they are also exposed to new ideas and more information. A simple internet search can help them find anything from help with their homework to pictures of silly animals with captions. Kids are also able to make quick connections between ideas and can rapidly change activities. Some people worry that the instant gratification of the internet could be causing kids to develop short attention spans. Though this may be true for some, it has also taught other children powerful multitasking skills that will serve them later in life.

Connecting with Strangers and Friends through the Web

Children of the computer age are also comfortable making connections with other people through the web. It is important for parents to teach their kids about personal safety in order to avoid predators online. Web connections start at a young age, though, as websites centered around games for kids include chatting systems and friend lists that allow users to connect with other kids across the world. Computers also enable kids to forge connections online with people they know in real life. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter allow them to keep up with a constant stream of messages and updates from friends.

Computers are a powerful tool that have significantly changed the way our lives work. As adults continue to adjust to the rapidly changing pace of the internet and other new technologies, today's children will adjust differently. While adults are keeping up with new technologies, the kids are simply following along. For children who have always grown up with personal computers readily available, each new advancement is simply another progression into an already fast paced and interconnected world.
