Jaundice is a disease caused by defect in the pitta dosha. It is called as Kamala. When there is an excessive circulation of bile pigments in the blood, this disease is caused. Pitta dosha controls the bile pigments.

Therefore, jaundice is a liver disease. It can occur when there is a blockage in the bile duct, or if there is destruction of red blood cells. When a person has jaundice, their skin becomes yellow. This feature is yellow, even in the eyes and nails. Feces and urine also get colors. The yellow color is an indication that the flow of bile is in excess.

Along with the yellowness of the skin, there are other symptoms associated with jaundice. Indigestion occurs and the person becomes very weak. Jaundice can also cause the body to itch.

(1) Useful Herbs in the treatment of jaundice

1. Berberis (Berberis vulgaris)

Berberis is a very effective herb for all kinds of liver ailments, especially jaundice. So effective is the herb that is the nickname of "jaundice berries. It is a bitter tonic to be given to a jaundice patient several times a day that makes teaspoons quarter. The liquid extract of the fruit also has similar properties.

2. Chicory (Cichorium Chichorium)

All parts of the chicory plant are useful in the treatment of liver diseases. The flowers, seeds and roots are the most used. The juice of the chicory can help in the treatment of sluggish liver, obstruction of bile flow and an enlarged spleen, all of which are associated with jaundice. Chicory can also promote healthy bile secretion.

3. Gokulakanta (Hygrophila spinosa)

The root of the plant gokulakanta is potent in the treatment of liver diseases such as jaundice and hepatitis. An infusion of the root of the herb in water is prepared and gives the patient two or three times a day.

4. India Aloe (Aloe barbadensis)

India aloe is an excellent remedy for liver problems such as jaundice. For effective treatment, the pulp of its leaves should be taken with black salt and ginger every morning for a period of ten days.

7. Snake gourd (Trichosanthes Anguina)

Snake gourd is taken as an infusion of its leaves for the treatment of jaundice. It is usually taken with cilantro.

8. Turpeth (Operculina turpethum)

Turpeth is the other best Ayurvedic remedy for jaundice. Nisoth is known as Ayurveda. The powder of this herb is prescribed mixed with warm water twice a day.

(2) Dietary Treatments for Jaundice

1. Sweet foods are suitable for a jaundice patient. Easy digestion sweet foods in liquid form should be consumed as juice, cane sugar, orange juice and other fresh fruit juices. Dried grapes are also beneficial. Pomegranate is good for jaundice, but has a slightly bitter taste.

2. Fresh vegetables should be included in the diet. They should be cooked in oil and greener minimum possible. That is, the use of spices should be limited. Bitter vegetables like bitter gourd and bitter variety of the thighs are suitable for a jaundice patient.

3. Fat intake should be limited. Even curds must not give the patient the jaundice. Buttermilk can be given if the butter has been carefully removed from it.

4. Alcohol is very dangerous to a jaundice patient. It can seriously complicate the disease, with fatal consequences. Therefore, alcohol in any form should be avoided.

(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Jaundice

Ayurvedic treatment for jaundice start with a cleansing therapy. This helps to remove or accumulated toxins in the liver and the rest of the body. Strong purgatives are avoided.

The drugs of choice for the treatment of jaundice are nisoth and kutki. Their roots are administered to the patient in powder form. The two herbs can be taken either jointly or individually, depending on the severity of jaundice and the patient's inner strength.

Arogya Avipattikara Vardhini choorna and vati are the usually prescribed medicines in jaundice. These should be taken in amounts teaspoon twice daily with water or honey.

Another general medicine which can be used in all kinds of jaundice is Bhumyamalaki. This is a short grass that rarely have access. Its juice is given mixed with honey in a quantity of one teaspoon three times a day. Vasak, Triphala Kakamachi and other drugs are used.

(4) Home Remedies for Jaundice

1. Vegetable juice bitter as bitter gourd are very effective in the treatment of jaundice. Crush the plants and extract the juice by pressing with a cloth. This juice should ideally be had in the morning. A glass of juice a day is recommended.

2. Prepare a cup of beet juice and lemon in equal proportions. Having this juice for a few days definitely cure jaundice.

3. Extract juice of amalaki (Indian gooseberry, Emblica officinalis). Have this juice thrice a day in an amount of a teaspoon. This is a powerful remedy for all ailments of the liver.
