As a parent I want to be the very best that I can be, I feel that my role is to give my children a platform for them to build themselves a happy and fulfilling life. I want them to really go for their dreams. I want them to never give up. I want them to be inspired, motivated and optimistic. I want a lot or do I ? Is what I want for them unreasonable? Who they are is more important than what they do.
So how do I best inspire my children to become everything they can be? How do I do that ? It is a fair question. In a moment of complete self honesty, I realised that I can’t inspire my children to be something that I am not prepared to be myself. How can I say to them, “Even though I have given up on my dreams and goals you never ever should”? That sounds empty and it feels empty. What are my goals? What have I given up on? Whilst I love raising my 3 amazing children, it feels like there has to be more and deep down I knew that there was.
In an environment that is becoming more challenging for parents, with no end of readily accessible expert advice. I have heard a lot of experts say “keep your children busy” fill up all of their available time with so much stuff that they do not have time to get themselves into trouble. Whilst I think involving kids in activities, team sports, musical instruments etc is healthy there seems to be something defensive about living this way. It is no surprise that kids crave down-time where they just want to watch TV or play computer games and disconnect. Ironically we are living in the information age, where we are more digitally connected than ever before and yet it feels like we are creating a generation of disconnection with our children?
When people ask me about the greatest thing that I gained from doing the Avatar® course it would have to be connection. I have always felt very connected to my kids but the level of connection that is now possible is incredible. The tools that I learned to use on the Avatar course have allowed me to become very present and really appreciate the world that I live in. I no longer have attention being drained by past events that I can not change or future events that may never happen! I live in the present moment and am amazed with the connection that is possible living this way. This connectedness now flows into every relationship in my life.
So back to the question how do I inspire my children? Well for me it is a matter of being inspired myself and living my life that way. Being happy, inspired and positive is as effortless now for me as it was when I was young. I re-discovered my goals and what really inspired me when I did the Avatar course.
How many times do we really invest in ourselves, something that is lasting? We might take a holiday, buy a new outfit or a new car but that feeling of excitement is temporary and as soon as it is over we quickly begin to crave the next one. Our children replicate these patterns and we now live in a society that is addicted to instant gratification. What I discovered about my desire to help my children is that I first have to help myself. Avatar is an investment in yourself that is lasting and the benefits you get flow to the people that you care about most.
