Cystitis or bladder infections are a common problem for women, which is characterised a number of uncomfortable symptoms. Most frequently, increased sexual activity is considered responsible for the health condition; however, there are additional factors that may contribute in leading to the problem. Infections of the bladder can be caused by a number of different bacteria, including intestinal bacteria. While increased sexual activity plays a significant role in spread of unwanted bacteria to the urinary tract, it’s also possible that wiping back to front, after having been to the bathroom, can have an effect. While prescription medications for cystitis are mostly recommended by experts to treat this condition, over the counter drugs are also available. However prescription options can also be used in cases where an infection is particularly stubborn.

This problem is mostly common among women as length of their urethra is shorter than men, increasing the changes of bacteria causing irritation of the urinary tract. Cystitis or bladder infections aren’t usually considered to be a serious problem, especially among women, which is why over-the-counter treatments are usually sufficient enough to deal with the infection. However when infections become frequent or are particularly severe, prescription medications for cystitis are available, along with effective self-help methods. It is widely believed that combination of these two methods may help a person to get over the problem within as little four to nine days, depending on the nature of the infection.

The self-help methods include:

  • Drinking plenty of water (at least 6 to 8 glasses every day)
  • Avoiding alcohol
  • Temporary abstinence from sexual activities
  • In case of treating the health condition with prescription medications, physicians often vote for administering Trimethoprim tablets. The antibiotic properties of the medication directly attack the infection causing bacterial cells and destroy their capacity to foliate. In the same way Trimethoprim tablets restrict the infection causing bacteria from spreading anymore, consequently empowers your natural immunity to remove it completely from your physical system.
