I developed a terrible inferiority complex growing up, but not because I was ugly or had some physical defect. No, I had an alcoholic father that abused me with words that created in me very low self esteem. But one day that all began to change. I got saved. And God being the merciful person He is, began to help me overcome my inferiority complex and He also helped me to forgive those that had wronged me. He showed me how I could become the person I was created to be, an overcomer, not a loser.
"For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith" (1 John 5:4).
He showed me the battlefield is in the mind. So for me to win the battle in my mind, God directed me to begin using His Word to lay siege to those destructive thought patterns that had held me captive so long to a defeated inner image.
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper that any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12).
So each day I would quote scriptures that would attack the destructive strongholds that had been so deeply entrenched in my mind. Below are some of the scriptures I used. Notice how I use "I" with these scriptures to personalize them, make them my own. Very important. The following are scripture promises I used from Charles Capps' mini-book, "God's Creative Power Will Work for You."
"I am the body of Christ and Satan hath no power over me. For I overcome evil with good" (1 Corinthians 12:27; Romans 12:21).
"I will fear no evil for thou art with me Lord, your Word and your Spirit they comfort me" (Psalm 23:4).
"No weapon formed against me shall prosper, for my righteousness is of the Lord. But whatever I do will prosper for I'm like a tree that's planted by the rivers of water" (Isaiah 54:17; Psalm 1:3).
"Christ has redeemed (paid the price for our freedom) me from the curse of the law. Therefore, I forbid any sickness or disease to come upon this body" (Galatians 3:13).
"Christ has redeemed me from the curse of the law. Christ has redeemed me from poverty, Christ has redeemed me from sickness, Christ has redeemed me from spiritual death" (Galatians 3:13; Deuteronomy 28:15-68).
Here are some other powerful declarations I created that will also destroy destructive strongholds in the mind:
"Because I am born of God and His heir and more valuable than many sparrows, therefore I have great value. I honor and esteem myself highly, but I honor and esteem others more than myself" (Galatians 4:7; Matthew 10:31; Romans 12:10).
"The blessing of Abraham has come upon me through Jesus Christ and therefore whatever I do will prosper" (Galatians 3:14).
"Because God has shed His love abroad in my heart by the Holy Spirit, I love God more than life and I love myself and others with the love of God. I put God first, others second and myself last." (Romans 5:5; Mark 12:30-31).
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens, enables and empowers me. There is nothing I cannot do through Christ for with God all things are possible" (Philippians 4:13; Matthew 19:26).
"I am the head and not the tail, above and not beneath" (Deuteronomy 28:13).
The Lord also showed me in His Word the power of the tongue. You create your destiny by your words and actions. Ever listen to the words of a loser with an inferiority complex? I was a loser. Losers speak words of defeat. Words of death and not of life. Grumbling and complaining words pour out of their mouths like poison. On the other hand, ever been around a winner? Their words are edifying and are encouraging to themselves and all those around them.
Jesus is our example of how to walk and talk victoriously. People flocked to Him like bees to honey. Let His loving, positive thinking and positive speaking life be your pattern for daily living, bearing good fruit in word and action.
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof" (Proverbs 18:21).
"Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything." (Proverbs 13:3)
I also learned we paint and create pictures on the inside of us with our words. A person that speaks negatively can paint and create a negative and defeated image on the inside of them. A person that speaks positive words (God's promises) will create a winning image on the inside of them.
He showed me we are to keep a watch over our mouth and mind. To only say and think things in line with His will, His Word. For God hates grumbling and complaining. It opens the door for the enemy to attack you spiritually, soulfully or physically.
"Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips" (Psalm 141:3).
I want to remind you who you are in Christ. Let these glorious attributes saturate your mind as you daily think and ponder them. In Christ you are:
Victorious, an overcomer, triumphant, more than a conqueror, a child of God, an heir of God, holy, His workmanship, a new creation, a king, a priest, the temple of the holy spirit, the light of the world, an ambassador for Christ, beloved of God, blessed, healed, saved, redeemed (set free by His ransom), a living stone, protected, filled with God's love and faith, you have the wisdom of God, you have the mind of Christ, called to walk in glory, virtue and His perfect will, complete in Christ, prosperous, have all power, riches, strength, honor, your steps are ordered by the Lord and you can hear His voice.
That's a mouthful, but it is all true because God cannot lie. It is up to you to believe it.
Tear down those strongholds with God's Word. Begin to daily boldly speak and declare who you are in Christ even if your mind argues with you and says it isn't true. Tell your mind to shut up in Jesus' name and get in line with God's Word. Refuse to think and speak words of poverty, lack and defeat. Let God's promises become more real to you than your circumstances. You are what God says you are. You are destined by God to win in this life!
"If God be for us, who can be against us" (Romans 8:3).
I hope this message of hope will encourage you to keep a watch over your mind and mouth, to only think and say things in line with God's Word, which is His will for your life. As you memorize, meditate and assimilate God's promises of who you are in Christ and what your inheritance is in Christ, then you will be building the image within you that is destined to win, prosper and advance God's Kingdom on earth as you daily submit to His will.
