With one and three kids being raised by a single mom, you would think there would be a ton of help out there for single moms. When I became a single mom, I was so frustrated at the lack of information I found to help us, so I created it.
Every single mom wants to be supported, encouraged, and empowered. We need someone in our corner saying, "Yes you can!" Yet one of the things I often hear from single moms is they lack support. Do you feel like no one gets it? You're not alone. Most single moms feel that way. Your family doesn't understand. When your married friends complain about their husband it takes everything out of you to not scream, "At least you have a possibility of someone else helping."
Why don't you get the support you so desperately want and where do you find it? Here are five ways you can find the support, encouragement, and empowerment you need to set a goal, go after a job, or fulfill your dreams….or for anything!
1. Meetup.com--This website provides groups in your area for whatever it is you're looking for…single moms, social, networking, entrepreneurs, dating, adventure, or poetry reading. It's easy. Just do a search for what you want in your area. If you can't find one, then start one. You can't find support by sitting at home, so get involved. There's no obligation to go to every meet up. Just go to the ones that appeal to you.
2. Facebook groups--You've heard of Facebook for connecting with your friends, but did you know they offer groups too where you can connect with like minded people? You can post, respond, and encourage each other. Do a search and you'll find all different kinds.
3. Linked In--Most people think Linked in is for job searching, but they also have groups. For example they have Single Mom Entrepreneurs, in which I belong. You join the groups, and then you can post a question and see all the people respond. Oh, and don't forget to reply to others' posts too. It creates interactions and establishes rapport, which is a great way to start a relationship.
4. Programs--When you join a program, whether it's coaching, social, or self help, make sure they have a community that you can participate in. You can talk with people who are also dealing with similar struggles, developing new goals, or creating a new life. You will find people who just "get" it. You can say things to them you may feel hesitant to say to others for fear of judgment, jealousy, or backlash. I'm involved in program communities, and it's amazing. They are there when you feel no one else is or that no one will understand. They will, because they just "get" it and love you for you.
5. Clean out your circle--What? You are made up of the five people you surround yourself with the most. If those five people are Negative Nancys, Debbie Downers, or Nina Naysayers get rid of them. If they are your family, then make sure the time you're spending with them are very few and far between. You don't want people dragging you down, telling you that you can't do something, or not believing the greatness life has in store for you. If they aren't living it, believing it, or willing to help you, then they don't need to be a prominent figure in your life. They will only hold you back.
Support, support, support is a necessity. Make sure you're receiving it from the right people…the people who will lift you on their shoulders, praise your small successes, and help you along the way. They will be your biggest fans and your strongest advisers. Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed and know you will. These five sources will provide you with tons of people who will give you support you need. So get out there and find the support you desire, crave, and deserve! Happy support looking!
