Hallux rigidus is a problem associated with the joint of great toe. In the Ayurvedic approach it is known as sandhigata vata, which is known as arthritis in allopathy. It is a condition of arthritis which results in the pain and stiffness in the joint of the big toe and leads to the difficulty in walking and walk up/ walk down stairs. The person cannot run or even walk normally. The disease arthritis comes into existence with the erosion of the cartilage between the joints. The erosion of joints increases with motion and if it goes on increasing gradually, it can lead to the permanent damage within the joint. There is no cause known for this disease but it keeps on increasing with the time gradually. This problem results in the difficulty to bend the toe in an upward direction with the advancement of this disease.

Stiffness around the big toe joint

CAUSES OF HALLUX RIGIDUS
Heredity is the main reason for the development of deformity named hallux rigidus. Lots of people inherit certain foot types from the parents.
It may happen due to the disturbance in biomechanics of feet and results in the unbalanced foot structure.
It can also occur because of the traumatic incident. In the case the simple jamming of the toe occurs and results in the localized inflammation within the joint.
Some people with flat feet or low arches are more prone to develop hallux rigidus deformity.
The inflammation within the joint occurs with increased activity and motion, this inflammation can leads to the arthritic changes.

HERBAL REMEDIES FOR HALLUX RIGIDUS
1. Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera)
Ashwagandha is a medicinal herbs with lots of beneficial effects in various diseases. Ashwagandha possess the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties are helpful in reliving swelling and pain of the hallux rigidus patient. It enhances the immunity and strength to the body to fight against various diseases.

2. Dry Ginger or Sonth (Zingiber officinalis)
Sonth or dry ginger can also be used to benefit the condition of hallux rigidus. It is known for its anti-inflammatory properties which helps in removing pain and inflammation of feet.

3. Guggul (Commiphora mukul)
Guggul possess properties of anti-inflammatory, natural rejuvenator and perform detoxification of the body. It heals the joints and reduces inflammation during the disease of hallux rigidus. It can be used to increase hemoglobin, lowering of cholesterol level and is useful in hypothyroidism.

4. Curcumin (Curcuma Longa)
Curcumin is a widely used herb to prevent many diseases. Anti-oxidants property of this herb is useful in reducing free- radicals from the body and resulting in the improvement in the health and immunity of hallux rigidus patient. It contains anti-inflammatory property which prevents inflammation during hallux rigidus in feet. It is antimicrobial and protect the body from various infections. It is used as anticancer remedy to prevent cancer.

5. Amalaki (Emblica Officinalis)
Amalaki can be useful in many disorders. It possess rejuvenating and antioxidant properties. It helps in removing the free radicals from the body and regeneration of cells. It is useful in strengthening the immunity in hallux rigidus disease. Amla is known for its antipyretic, cardio-tonic, aphrodisiac, anti-diabetic and gastrointestinal properties. It is useful in constipation relieving and maintains the blood sugar.

6. Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia)
Tinospora is known for its property of immune moderator. It is very useful against many auto-immune disorders like gout and rheumatoid arthritis. It is useful in hallux rigidus disease, where it boosts the immune system and provides strength to the body.
