Graduation season is here and we all know what that means: transitions, growth and new opportunities.
Developing a successful business also often involves the same stages, and running a business means we graduate from one stage to another.
Adolescence and middle school are the years when many dreams are formed. This is the time when kids first get a desire to be or do certain things with their lives.
And so it is for many budding entrepreneurs. All businesses have to be dreamed of before they can become reality. It's not the age; it's the stage that matters. At some point in the past of every business owner is a time when they graduate from wishing to own a business to making it happen.
During the high school years, young people get a foundation for adult life. They gain useful knowledge and facts; they begin to mature and learn how to be independent. This stage can be compared to the start up phase of a business.
With a new business the owner is still learning the systems and the best ways to do things. Much like high school graduation and the period right after that, the new entrepreneur is discovering how to put all the planning, learning and preparation to practical use.
Something we all know: there's theory, and there's application. Every business situation is a unique set of circumstances. Each individual must discover ways to plug the relevant information and goals into his or her specific business model.
And when this is done there's another graduation of sorts, from start-up to seasoned business owner. Just as talented and determined students transition to the next stage of education or career, so does the entrepreneur.
The growth stage of business is often the most exciting as well as the most risky. It's sort of like when a college graduate who needs to support himself is trying to decide how or whether to go on to graduate school.
These transitions cause many to falter, or think they are doing something wrong. Usually, it's just a matter of getting the proper kind of help at the right time.
In the same way that students may need tutoring help or financial aid to graduate to the next level of the educational ladder, business owners often need help to make the transitions necessary to graduate to the next level of business.
