Goal setting isn’t easy and I am not here to tell you it is. Success is something you earn after putting in the effort to plan, refine and execute the vision you have created for life. Do not fool yourself into believing that with just a plan of action it will be a smooth road to living your dreams.

You will experience roadblocks, obstacles and resistance from all around you. The feeling can be overwhelming and make you want to throw in the towel. The truth is most people do quit as soon as they experience their first set back or complete utter failure. They just give up and quit.

Have you been one of those people before? You were progressing along at full speed ahead feeling confident only to come crashing into what seemed like an insurmountable barrier. All of your dreams and goals faded away until one day you realized ten years had gone by and you hadn’t changed in any way.

Let’s say you find the goals you wrote down ten years ago only to discover you had actually crushed that initial roadblock only three months later but due to the lack of focus on goal setting you just let your success slip away. You quit as most people do, right before they would have made it. Then while looking at the goals you have an epiphany.

You come to the realization that it wasn’t that you were not physically capable of achieving your goals but that you had convinced yourself you would keep failing, hit more roadblocks and that success was impossible. You had made up your mind that you were not good enough, smart enough or deserving of success. Unintentionally you choose to create the biggest roadblock there is; a fear of failure mindset.

I am here to tell you there is no such thing as failure and that you are a capable and deserving human being. If I am saying there is no such thing as failure then what exactly is happening. You have the emotions of failing, the stress of uncertainty and that nagging self-doubt that comes with failure so what is it?

You are learning and growing. That’s it. When you approach your failures as simply one more way to improve your personal performance you find the positive in them. Initially you may experience disappointment that something did not work out the first time but with a personal development mindset you will simply try again.

The secret here is to try again in a different way. Insanity is doing the same actions over and over again expecting different results. Absolute crazy is repeating the same mistakes over and over when you already know what the outcome would be. You touched the stove only once to know it would burn you and yet you have been fired from your last two jobs for sleeping in. Learn from your mistakes and stop the absolute craziness.

When you are in a success mindset you will break down your failures and mistakes into exactly what went wrong. Then you will create a plan around how to ensure those do not happen again. Failure is just learning in disguise.

I will close with a bit of advice. When it comes to determining why we failed, the first place to look is inside of ourselves. Yes there would have been external circumstances that existed but it is how we dealt with those circumstances that determined our level of success. You need to self-reflect on who you were choosing to be in those moments of failure and then choose not to be that person the next time. Goal setting will take you wherever your mindset will allow.
