Episode under Stage 1 (S1) of the Passion Pays journey: Understand Your Passions, Fundamentally

Many people don’t know what they want or they want much less than they deserve. But if you don't even allow yourself to find out what you really want, you don't stand much chance of getting it.  How can you ask for what you want if you don't know what it is? How can you convince yourself or anybody else if you don't have the clarity that comes with your determination?

In this two-part episode of the Get Passionate Radio Show, we are addressing the soul-searching question: "What (on earth) do I really want to do (with my life)?" I lay out the 5 steps that I applied to go, in one week, from a blurry idea and uncertain future I couldn't even formulate, to finding 3 helpers, 4 strategies, a list of role models and a roadmap to carry out my vision. If you want similar or better results about the next move in your career, you do not want to miss this one. You can listen to the episode’s part 1 and part 2 with full instructions, examples and illustrations. You can also get bonuses for applying the techniques (see ‘extra help’ section of the article).

Here are the 5 steps:

Step 1 – Set a date with yourself

Choose a time (for at least one hour) and book it in your diary as an appointment with yourself; the same way you would make an appointment with anyone else that is important to you. On your date, clear all distractions.

Step 2 – Have a good rant! Complain, complain, complain

This probably one the rare times that I will encourage you to complain about your life.

  1. Get all your frustrations out of your system by answering these two questions out loud:
      A. WHAT AM I FRUSTRATED FOR NOT ACHIEVING?
B.WHERE DO I FEEL THAT I AM FAILING?
  2. What do I NOT want?
      A. Take a pen a paper.
      B. Now sit down and write all the things that you are currently experiencing and that you do NOT want as part of your experience anymore.

Step 3 – GET INSIDE YOUR MIND

Set a timer for 20 minutes and write down the answers to the following 5 sets of questions:

Q1- Turn your Do-Not Want’s into your Want’s
Q2- What’s missing in my working life that would make me smile right now thinking about it?
Q3- What have I been/felt nudged to do?
Q4 - What would I dare to do if I knew I couldn't fail?
Q5 - What change do I most want to see in the world?

STEP 4- WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?

Even if you think you know what you want, you may have to probe deeper to know what you really want. Do you want greener pastures but hate the weeding? Ask yourself: Do I like the idea of it or do I really want it?

What’s your emotional Why? Probably the most important question. So ask yourself:

WHY do I want to do this? For what purpose?

STEP 5 - GET OUT OF YOUR MIND

  1. Know what you don’t know but want to know.
  2. Stay alert to nudges and clues to the answers you seek
  3. Refine your vision with outside examples and models that fit YOU

In the next episode (7th March 7pm GMT), we do a reality check about attitude and commitment with 3 exercises important to carry out if you don’t want to get fired!
