Many of you may be curious as to where the Jiu Jitsu Gi originated from. Well first, you must understand that in general, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu came from Judo which came from the original Japanese Jiu Jitsu. The true art form of Japenese Ju Jitsu has changed today and is no longer the same as it was originally. However, Judo is still very widely practiced and is even an Olympic sport practived all over the world. The Judo Gi is usually very baggy If you can tell. It is used for throws mostly so it is made baggy to make it easier for your opponents to grab a hold of you at ease to finish their techniques to get the throw and possibly submit you. If you would like to know where the Jiu Jitsu Gi came from you must look deeply into the Judo Gi and where this actually came from.

The Jiu Jitsu Gi is much different and much more modern than the Judo Gi. Before we go on, please make sure you understand when we speak about the Jiu Jitsu Gi, we are speaking of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi. So the Bjj Gi is cut a lot slimmer than the Judo Gi so that there is less material for your opponents to grab since Bjj is fought mostly on the ground only while in Judo you must stand mostly and once it hits the ground the fight is generally over. Unlike Judo in Bjj when the fight hits the ground that is when the action begins. Similarly, they both are very durable to withstand years of intense training because both martial arts have a lot of grabbing and pulling on the kimonos.

So you must understand that the Jiu Jitsu Gi originally came from the Japanse Jiu Jitsu but the Gi itself mostly was a modified version of the Judo Gi. Jiu Jitsu Gis are made with a bit more care than other martial arts Gis which is why they come out a little bit more expensive than other martial arts Gis. You still don’t need to pay anywhere near $200 for a nice Bjj Gi because at only around $100 you can get the best Bjj Kimonos like the Submission Gi.
