Discovery Plus, also known as Discovery+, was launched over a year ago in the United States with hundreds of hours of original and library content from Warner Bros. Discovery's conglomerates, including TLC, ID, Food Network, OWN, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, CNN, Magnolia Network and many more.

The streaming service experienced stiff competition from streaming giants such as Hulu, Netflix, Disney Plus, and many others. Still, Discovery hopes its nonfiction and peculiar content will set it apart.

David Zaslav, the Warner Bros. Discovery president and CEO, said, "Our ambition is simple: bring consumers the definitive and holistic destination for real-life entertainment at a price point that makes the perfect companion for every household's streaming and TV portfolio." David identified this gap in the streaming market by assessing that there is nothing like Discovery+ in the market today.

Discovery+ has significant advantages, including the world's greatest collection of reality brands and content built over more than 30 years across popular and striving media verticals and powerful partnerships with leading streaming platforms and distributors.

You can purchase Discovery Plus in the United States for $4.99 monthly. However, you would have to pay $6.99 per month for an ad-free subscription. Moreover, it also offers a seven-day free trial if you want to cancel. Your subscription includes up to five user profiles and simultaneous streaming on four different devices.

Where can I watch Discovery Plus?

Discovery Plus is only available in the US. However, you can also watch Discovery Plus in Australia or outside the USA by using a premium VPN to bypass the geo-restriction. It is launched with support from all major devices and OTT platforms.

You can watch Discovery Plus on Apple TV, Android TV, Xbox, Samsung Smart TVs, LG Smart TVs, Cox Contour TV, Roku, and SmartCast. In addition, discovery+ has partnered with Verizon communication in the United States, Sky in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and Vodafone in Europe. The Vodafone subscribers who pay monthly can get Discovery Plus free for six months.

New Verizon Fios Home Internet or 5G Home customers will get a year of Discovery Plus ad-free subscription. New and existing customers with Play More or Get More Unlimited Plans will also get a yearly subscription to Discovery Plus, while Start or Do More unlimited plan subscribers will get six months.

The multiyear Vodafone deal will give Discovery Plus access to Vodafone TV and mobile customers in 12 European markets. The markets include Vodafone subscribers in the U.K, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Turkey, and Greece. Discovery Plus also aims to penetrate South Asian and other European markets to remain competitive with streaming giants.

What can I watch on Discovery+?

Discovery Plus has an original content library of more than 150 hours. Its subscribers can watch over 50 exclusive series, including American Detective with Lt., 90 Day Bares All, Amityville Horror House, Uncensored, Bounty Hunters, Giada in Italy, and many more incredible contents. The company is planning to expand its on-demand hours of original content. Moreover, Magnolia Network also launched the Magnolia App and added more than 150 hours of content to the platform. The linear version of Magnolia took over DIY Network at the beginning of January 2022.

Magnolia Network shows are officially premiering on Discovery Plus on July 15, including Fixer Upper, Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, Family Dinner, Homegrown, and many more.

Chip and Joanna Gaines said in a statement, "From the beginning, our mission for Magnolia Network has been to tell good stories, and while our plan has evolved along the way, our original vision for this network has remained the same, i.e., to create a space where people leave feeling like it was time well spent.

The Implications of the Merger between Discovery with Warner Media

Discovery Inc. and AT&T completed their transaction to merge Discovery and AT&T’s WarnerMedia. The new conglomerate, known as a TV and Streaming Giant, is known as Warner Bros. Discovery.

WarnerMedia’s assets include streaming services HBO Max and HBO. Those assets, along with Discovery's portfolio of networks and Discovery Plus, put the new company in a better position to compete with streaming giants Disney Plus and Netflix.

Initially, it was ambiguous what is the future of HBO Max and Discovery Plus in the streaming market after the merger? However, during an investment conference, Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said that Discovery Plus plans to merge the products into one “blowout DTC product.”

The main thrust for Discovery Plus would be to harmonize the technology platforms building one very strong combined direct-to-consumer product and streaming platform, which would take a while. Another goal for the company would be to poach customers by offering original content and competing with Netflix and Hulu.
