Entrepreneurship is something that can be very rewarding for many people, but not everyone has what it takes to be a business owner. There are certain qualities that a person must possess if they want to be successful in operating their own business. Now, this doesn't mean that anyone without all of these skills can't try...anyone who really wants to make a change in their lives should do whatever it is that makes them happy. But, it is a really good idea to work on these skills if you don't already have them, so here are a few of them:

A willingness to take responsibility: When you run your own small business, unless you have the budget to be able to hire staff, or you are in a partnership with someone, you are going to be responsible for everything, and you need to be prepared for this. You will have to take care of the finances. If you do have staff, you have to take care of them by paying salaries etc. You have to service your customers to their satisfaction. If you are not willing to take on this type of responsibility, then owning a business may not be the right choice for you. But on the other hand, if you think this sounds like a challenge that you are up to, go for it!

Perseverence and determination will go a long way: When you are an entrepreneur, you must be willing to persevere no matter what. Things aren't just going to fall into your lap. You have to work for everything, and work hard. When things don't go the way you planned, you need to find ways to get around your obstacles and succeed. If you don't think that you have enough determination, then you may just as well stick with your old job. But, if you are ready and willing to accept the challenges of entrepreneurship, you will find the experience very rewarding.

Looking for and making sales: Obviously, sales are key to the success of any business, small or large. It can be really difficult to get out there and make sales, especially if you have never done it before. Some people are born sales people. Others have to work at it. If you are not overly experienced in sales, but want to be an entrepreneur, it would be a good idea to do some studying. You can even take some courses that will help, and a lot of government agencies will offer such courses at no cost to help people who are just starting out.

You have to be creative: A lot of the time, entrepreneurs run into situations where they really have to think fast to make things work out for them. This is where creativity comes in. When you are able to be creative, you can come up with some pretty interesting solutions to a lot of problems. You also need to be a little bit paranoid. This may sound strange, but having a little bit of healthy paranoia is going to be a huge asset, because it will keep you from making really big mistakes and you will always be alert to what is going on around you. Don't forget that assiduousness and determination are also very important traits for any entrepreneur to have.

Bounce back after failure: Not everything is going to be peaches and cream when you are an entrepreneur. There are always going to be little problems that crop up, and sometimes, there are going to be really big problems. It is essential that as an entrepreneur, you be able to bounce back from these problems, and actually be able to learn from them to make your business even better. Sadly, most businesses do fail in the first year of operation, but if you are able to bounce back, you can turn failure into success fairly easily. It just takes a little bit of hard work.
