You don’t really know somebody if you don’t know his or her name, do you? On the other hand, you may be familiar with a famous person’s name but that doesn’t mean that you know that person personally, right?
Your name is like a stamp; it has value, a history, and a destination. When someone mentions a name you recognize, it will bring back memories of that particular person.
The meaning of the name Jesus, Yeshua, or Joshua is priest. Christ means anointing and/or the anointed one.
“and they that know thy Name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.” (Ps. 10: 10)
A child in danger will yell out: Mommy! or: Daddy! Who do you cry to when you’re in distress? Is it Jesus? If you know Him and you call on His Name in faith, then He will be an everpresent help in trouble and fill you with peace.
On the other hand, many people do yell out His name, but they have never had a personal relationship with Him. Instead of connecting to a blessing, they are using God’s Holy Name in vain and thus are pronouncing a curse on themselves!
The same thing happens to those who exclaim: omigod. This appears to have become such a commonplace “acceptable” and seemingly innocent expression that I am sure most people are not aware of the implications of uttering it.
Ignorance, however, is not bliss. The Lord will not hold you guiltless when you take His Name in vain. (Deut. 5: 11) It is one of the Ten Commandments. The Commandments are there for your protection and blessing. There are blessings connected to adhering to them but consequences to ignoring them. Deuteronomy 28 spells out the abundant blessings that are available to you and warns about curses that can befall you if you do not have holy reverence for this glorious and fearful name: “The Lord Thy God.”(De. 28: 58:)
The Name of the Lord is referred to over and over again in the Psalms as a fortress, shelter, rock, strong tower, safe haven and so much more. His Name is glorious and fearful and is to be magnified.
Be encouraged, and know that there is mercy, forgiveness, healing and salvation in His Name.
“There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4: 12)
Call upon Him and he will answer you! (Jer. 33:3)
Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he has known My Name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.” (Ps. 91: 14 – 16)
